Texas has borders on the west with New Mexico, on the north with Oklahoma (across the Red River), and on the east with Louisiana (across the Sabine River) and with Arkansas.
Texas was the first, and to date, only, internationally recognized independent state to be directly admitted to the United States as a constituent state of the union.
Texas has largely had the good fortune of generally avoiding the racial and ethnic problems found in many southern states, in the state of California, and in large cities of the U.S. Northeast.

 U.S. Highway 287 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Though it is not signed in Yellowstone National Park, an implied route from the "northern" US 287 to the "southern" US 287 through the park may be assumed.
As of 2004, the highway's northern terminus is in Choteau, Montana, 100 miles (161 km) south of the Canadian border, at an intersection with U.S. Highway 89.
The route was extended southward to the Texas coast in 1940, and northward into Montana in 1965.

Shortly after the State of Texas acquired the park property in 1934, the park was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC).
At Big Spring State Park, however, the northern limit of the Edwards Plateau is reached, culminating in a series of bluffs rising 200 feet above the rolling plains.
To the north and east are the western Rolling Plains; to the south is the Edwards Plateau; and to the west are the southern High Plains (also known as the Llano Estacado or the Staked Plains).

 Wildlife Refuges of Southeast Texas
The McFaddin and Texas Point National Wildlife Refuges are located in close proximity on the upper Texas coast and contain a total combined acreage equivalent to 100 square miles of fish and wildlife habitat.
However, since much of Texas State Highway 87 has been washed out by coastal erosion, there is currently no dependable route of vehicle access through the refuge to an from High Island.
Texas Point is a destination for the well-prepared outdoor enthusiast.

Big Spring State Hospital, on State Highway 87 two miles northwest of Big Spring, is a psychiatric facility that the Texas legislature voted to establish in 1937.

When testimony was presented to the Senate committee that heard the bill, witnesses included not only a Texas State Trooper who had been hit by a passing vehicle on two separate occasions, but also a representative of a Texas tow-truck association whose members work to clear accident scenes, and whom passing traffic also threatens.
The highway is closed, and SH-73 may be used as an alternate until June 8, 2004.

 Jefferson County, Texas - State Highway 87
In 1990, the Texas Department of Transportation began planning for the reconstruction of SH 87 and requested that Jefferson County acquire the necessary Section 404 permit.
Enacted in 1998, the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century earmarked federal funding to complete the environmental documentation for reconstruction of SH 87, from Sabine Pass to the Bolivar Peninsula.
On August 18, 1999, a Notice of Intent was issued by the Federal Highway Administration announcing the preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement for the SH 87 project.

The Guadalupe River winds 250 miles through Texas and is the state's most heavily utilized recreational river.
