Topic: Text folding

 [No title]
Folding is useful for composing and browsing outlines of documents, allowing writers and readers to collapse sections or subsections while rearranging them or drilling down selectively.
Folding is also useful for writing and reading source code, allowing a programmer to temporarily collapse lengthy blocks of code to see the outer structure of an entire function or class, for example.
Folds can be nested, and you can also create a margin on the left of your terminal with :set foldcolumn=5 where you can see the opened/closed folds and their vertical extent.

Folding editor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A folding editor is a text editor that supports text folding or code folding, a mechanism allowing the user to hide and reveal blocks of text—typically this is done to allow the user to better see the overall structure of a document or program.
Folding is provided by many modern text editors, and syntax-based or semantics-based folding is now a component of many software development environments.
STET is a text editor (for documentation, programs, etc.) which folds files on the basis of blocks of lines; any block of lines can be folded and replaced by a name line (which in turn can be part of a block which itself can then be folded).

To access text that is folded away, you open the fold, in which case the contents are displayed in context of the surrounding text.
The fold marks are stored in the text as normal lines, but they are put into comments for whatever tool processes the files.

Tip #1168 - Folding for Plain Text files based on indentation : vim online
Folding based on indentation is the easiest and most intuitive way to hide sections of a file with minimal special formatting.
This will create folds based on a single-space indent (I wanted to be able to build a heirarchy many many levels deep, and using a tab for the fold indents very quickly pushed my text off the window, but I didn't want to mess with the tabstop).
Blank lines are folded based on the surrounding indentation (they are not counted as a 0 indent line).

Using invisible text-properties (I hope they are intended to make text invisible; it isn't implemented like that yet), it will be possible to hide folded text without affecting the text of the buffer.
Using even more text-properties, it may be possible to track pointer movements in and out of folds, and have Folding mode automatically enter or exit folds as necessary to maintain a sensible display.

 Science of Folding@Home
One of our project goals is to simulate protein folding in order to understand how proteins fold so quickly and reliably, and to learn how to make synthetic polymers with these properties.
While the nature of the fold is determined by the sequence, it is encoded in a very complicated manner.
Thus, protein folding can be seen as a connection between the genome (sequence) and what the proteins actually do (their function).

Folding white space and comments White space characters, including white space used in folding (described in section 2.2.3), may appear between many elements in header field bodies.
Wherever header folding appears in a message (that is, a header field body containing a CRLF followed by any WSP), header unfolding (removal of the CRLF) is performed before any further lexical analysis is performed on that header field according to this standard.
Though folding white space is permitted throughout the date-time specification, it is RECOMMENDED that a single space be used in each place that FWS appears (whether it is required or optional); some older implementations may not interpret other occurrences of folding white space correctly.

FTE is a programmers' text editor with a few tricks up its sleeve that you won't find in most editors.
If you haven't used an editor that does folding, you really just do not yet understand how useful it is. The idea behind folding is that the text you are editing is often composed of conceptual blocks that you want to be reminded of, but don't necessarily want to have to scroll through.
