Textbook - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In U.S. institutions of higher education, textbooks are chosen by the professor teaching the course, or by the department as a whole.
History textbooks are not subjected to review by professional academics, nor can authorship of a high school textbook be used to advance an academic toward tenure at a university.
The content of history textbooks thus lies entirely outside the academic forum of fact and social science and is instead determined by the political forces of state adoption boards and ideological pressure groups.

American School Board Journal: December 2000 Cover Story
Those textbooks are long gone, replaced by 20-pound packages of glitz that lure many school officials and state textbook administrators into thinking they're providing students with the best and latest in curriculum materials.
Textbooks are normally created by teams of authors, and publishers whip out new editions so quickly -- after all, no district wants to pay $75 for a textbook with last year's copyright -- that even listed authors often aren't aware when a new, modified version is out.
When scientists look at textbooks, she says, "some of them will say, 'Oh, boy, these are well written.' What they don't realize is that they're able to fill in all the gaps, and they don't have misconceptions.

History Textbook Controversies in Japan. ERIC Digest.
It is the Society's textbook, THE NEW HISTORY TEXTBOOK (one of eight junior high school history textbooks authorized by the Ministry of Education in April 2001), that has caused much debate in Japan over the past year.
As a mirror for Americans, Japan's textbook controversy may shed light on what could happen here if the dominant narrative, our "official" story of our past, were challenged by a counter narrative, one that threatens to alter or even replace a conventional textbook narrative.
With their students, American teachers might examine American textbook narratives while imagining that Mexican, Japanese, and Vietnamese scholars and students are reading over their shoulders as they teach and learn about American interpretations of the war with Mexico, the war in the Pacific, or the war in Vietnam.

The first history textbook problem is what educators, critics and journalists informally refer to as "dumbing down." Many history textbooks reflect lowered sights for general education.

God is also a banned word in the textbooks because he or she is too religious.
Ravitch said that textbook publishing is controlled by four main publishers and they aim to sell texts state by state, thus forcing them to dumb down the books and make the language as inoffensive as possible.

Judge nixes evolution textbook stickers - Science - MSNBC.com
ATLANTA - A federal judge Thursday ordered a suburban Atlanta school system to remove stickers from its high school biology textbooks that call evolution “a theory, not a fact,” saying the disclaimers are an unconstitutional endorsement of religion.
“The textbook stickers are a reasonable and evenhanded guide to science instruction and encouraging students to be critical thinkers,” the board said.
The stickers were added after more than 2,000 parents complained that the textbooks presented evolution as fact, without mentioning rival ideas about the beginnings of life, such as the biblical story of creation.

Bookstore managers at the 10 schools participating in the trial program say they expect some students to be put off by the restrictions, but say they are eager to provide a digital choice to students who are increasingly computer-centered--and help them save money in the process.
MBS Textbook Exchange, which provides inventory and accounting services as well as wholesale book distribution, developed the card system with input from the publishers and a handful of bookstores, hoping that it and its customers could avoid being cut out of the sales process as digital sales grew.
