 Texture Synthesis
texture synthesis for near-regular texture departing along the color and intensity axes while the underlying geometric regularity is well preserved.
We view such textures as statistical departures from regular patterns and argue that a thorough understanding of their structures in terms of their translation symmetries can enhance existing methods of texture synthesis.
We demonstrate the perils of texture synthesis for near-regular texture and the promise of faithfully preserving the regularity as well as the randomness in a near-regular texture sample.

This texture was sort of designed to look like a molten planet or a dying star, but it's up to your imagination.
Any transformations of the texture must appear either inside the individual textures (which are to be tiled) or outside the tiles block altogether.
A tiled texture may be used as one of the textures in another tiled texture to create a double-tiled texture (but you'll have to scale the inner one down or it'll overlap exactly with the outer one).

 Texture
"Texture", in music, describes two areas of musical phenomena: (1) melodic and harmonic relationships and (2) the density of the simultaneous layering of different musical components.
Considering musical texture in our second broad interpretation (the density of the simultaneous layering of different musical components) it should be noted that music also has a quality of thinness or thickness, transparency or opaqueness.
The qualifiers "thin", "thick", "transparent", "opaque", "light" and "dense" are good companions to the term "texture" when describing the effect of relative fullness of musical sound upon the listener not only for Western music but for all world musics.

We are interested in investigating the effect of texture orientation on shape perception, with the goal of determining how to use texture to enhance the representation of surface shape for visualization applications.
These are examples of some of the sample textures and textured surfaces that we have used in our latest experiments investigating the effect of various texture characteristics on shape perception.
These textures were very easy to create but they have the disadvantage that they can only represent one of the two principal directions at a time.

To properly map a texture onto a quad, you have to make sure the top right of the texture is mapped to the top right of the quad.
The top left of the texture is mapped to the top left of the quad, the bottom right of the texture is mapped to the bottom right of the quad, and finally, the bottom left of the texture is mapped to the bottom left of the quad.
If the corners of the texture do not match the same corners of the quad, the image may appear upside down, sideways, or not at all.

The World of Texture. Introduction - webreference.com
Most textures on computer screen are analogous to some material surfaces, although cyber-textures have a number of unique features irreproducible in real-world objects.
colors, textures on the screen can be more varied than those in print, since the glossy paper of magazines or the coarse raster of newspaper prints often dampen the fine texture in the image.
A texture (again, just like color) needs to be stretched over some space in order to be perceivable, and it is therefore more often that a (larger) background plate---or the whole web page background---has a marked texture while a (smaller) element placed over the textured plane is more likely to be plain flat.

 GameDev.net - Texture Splatting in Direct3D
All it requires is one texture unit for the alphamap, one texture unit for the texture, and the correct blending states.
The mul instruction multiplies the first texture by its alphamap, which is stored in the red channel of the texture in sampler 0.
It can be disguised a little by properly wrapping textures and a skilled level designer, but I have not thought of an elegant solution.  In my experience it has been more trouble than it's worth to solve this problem, and I believe the advantages of texture splatting far outweigh the issue.
