The ThAIRapy Vest is a device and system for clearing excess mucus from lung airways (bronchi and bronchioles).
It is principally used in the treatment of cystic fibrosis, but is gaining use in the treatment of other diseases, such as bronchiectasis, COPD, cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy, in which excessive mucus can block airways due to excessive production or impaired clearance.
It uses a compressor to inflate and deflate the vest rhythmically at timed intervals and thus imposes high frequency chest wall oscillations that are transferred to the lungs.

The authors speculate that the advantage of The Vest™ may be due to its simultaneous treatment of numerous affected sites and/or to a beneficial effect of high-frequency chest compression on peripheral mucus clearance.
This abstract reports on The Vest™ use by 27 patients in one cystic fibrosis clinic who were prescribed The Vest™ Model 102.
Adherence to Vest therapy was 48±28% for study participants and 49±30% for a group of age-comparable patients who received the standard Outcomes Monitoring provided by the company but were not enrolled in the study.

CF patients may be decreased to BID and Q-4 PRN at night if the ThAIRapy Vest is used in conjunction with the Secretion Management Protocol.
-Once the ThAIRapy Vest Protocol has been discontinued on non-ventilated patients, the RCP will instruct the patient on standard incentive spirometry if they are capable to self administer the device.

 ThAIRapy Vest Purpose
The Vest from American Biosystems is the latest therapeutic device created to provide airway clearance therapy.
The inflatable vest is made from vinyl material and has two ports located on the front.
This reduction in EELV is associated with a decrease in airway diameter which, together with the rapid compression of the thorax, increases expiratory flow rates.

High-frequency chest compression or high-frequency chest wall oscillation (HFCC/HFCWO) devices have been investigated as an alternative (not an adjunct) to conventional chest physical therapy (i.e., chest percussion and postural drainage) in the treatment of cystic fibrosis and other similar conditions.
Three such devices include the ThAIRapy Bronchial Drainage System (ThAIRapy Vest), the Flutter device, and the intrapulmonary percussive ventilator (Percussionaire).
HFCC/HFCWO devices are considered investigational due to a lack of sufficient data to permit conclusions regarding an effect on health outcome and a lack of medical consensus regarding effectiveness.
