The Thaana script is used to write the modern Dhivehi language of the Maldives, a group of atolls in the Indian Ocean, circa 650 km SW of Sri Lanka, about 4°N 73°E. 226,000 people live in the Maldives.
Thaana is written from right to left and partakes of features of both the Indic and Arabic script varieties.
The present shapes of the Thaana (called the Gabulhi Thaana) date from the 19th century; earlier shapes should probably be considered font variants.

Thaana is the writing system for the Dhivehi language spoken in the Maldives.
It shows clear influences from Arabic, but whereas Arabic has numerous forms for every letter, Thaana has one form for each letter.
The letter alifu has three main uses: It can act as a carrier for a vowel with no preceding consonant; when it carries a sukun, it indicates gemination (lengthening) of the following consonant; and if alifu+sukun occurs at the end of a word, it indicates that the word ends in /eh/.

As of version 10.3, Apple does not provide a Thaana keyboard, but there is a freeware Thaana OS X keyboard utility available, which works in Unicode aware applications like Microsoft Office 2004 or Text Edit.
