Thaana - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is an abugida, with vowels derived from the vowel diacritics of the Arabic abjad.
The origins of Thaana are unique among the world's alphabets: The first nine letters (h–v) are derived from the Arabic numerals, whereas the next nine (m–d) were the local Indic numerals.
This means that Thaana is one of the few alphabets not derived graphically from the original Semitic alphabet — unless the Indic numerals were (see Brahmi numerals).

An abugida is to be contrasted with a syllabary, where symbols with similar sounds look nothing like one another, but also to be contrasted with an alphabet proper, where separate symbols are used to denote the consonants and the vowels.
Thaana is also like an abugida in that vowels are marked with diacritics.
That is, it is equivalent to an abjad with obligatory vowel marking, like the Arabic alphabet as used for Kurdish in Iraq, as is thus essentially alphabetic.

Thaana is an alphabetic script consisting of symbols for 24 basic consonants and 10 vowels.
In contrast to Arabic writing, Thaana letters are never joined to their neighbors, and their shapes remain unvaried regardless of context.
In a typical Thaana newspaper, one will see a smattering of words written in Arabic alongside the Thaana text, making it clear that the Maldivian populace is also familiar with Arabic script.

It shows clear influences from Arabic, but whereas Arabic has numerous forms for every letter, Thaana has one form for each letter.
The letter alifu has three main uses: It can act as a carrier for a vowel with no preceding consonant; when it carries a sukun, it indicates gemination (lengthening) of the following consonant; and if alifu+sukun occurs at the end of a word, it indicates that the word ends in /eh/.
