 JPRI Working Paper No. 87
Burmese high school and university students were a prominent and much admired group in colonial society, and their rather playful political activism during the late 1930s resembled that of Americans and Europeans in the 1960s rather than Burmese oppositionists today, who face jail, torture, and possibly death.
That Burmese used the term to refer to themselves had subversive meanings for the colonial regime.) The Thakins, who by the end of the decade included the student leaders Aung San and Nu, led the drive for independence and attacked mainstream politicians for being subservient to the colonial overlords.
Their training, which was so tough that at times some of the Thakins were on the verge of revolt, lasted from April until October.

The inverted use of the word to refer to Burmese was an act of defiance, a precursor in some sense to the reclamation of slurs by minorities today.) The Thakins didn't have a dominant ideology; Aung San's socialism, like that of most of his contemporaries, owed more to humane Buddhism than any political philosophy.
Aung and another figure key to the future of Burma, Thakin Nu (later to change his name a second time to U Nu), organized demonstrations against the British in that year which had spiraled out of control, transformed into an orgy of bloodshed against Indians and other minorities.
The way in which the Thakin leaders lost control of the crowds they stirred diminished them in the eyes of these minorities as well as many Burmese, particularly the country's lawyer-politicians, who had toyed with the idea of using the students as leverage against the British and their own domestic enemies.
