In those days, despite its proximity to Graz, Thal was a provincial, isolated place to live, with a total of three telephones and one TV set (at the local Gasthaus).

Graz is the second largest city in Austria, famous not only for its historical downtown, but also as the birthplace of Arnold Schwarzenegger.
House #145 on Thal-Linak, in which Arnold lived until he was 19, also turned out not quite like I expected it to be, and was situated in the wrong place according to what I imagined.
Austria is a Catholic country, and the only church in Thal was also Catholic.

This little village is just outside the bigger town of Graz, and still contains Arnold's boyhood home, the castle he played around, the lake where he first witnessed and met bodybuilders, and other landmarks that haven't changed much in the past 56 years.
We leave for Italy on May 19th, and the drive to Thal will take place on the 30th.
I've got the course plotted and even a place to stay, although finding information on Thal is not as easy as one might think.

Err, while Arnold is likely mistaken as to his idea of Austria's less than capitalist political system, this idea that its preposterous that he saw tanks or lived in fear of the Soviets when he was a small child hardly seems to have been proved.
He's is an ambitious and gifted opportunist, and if Austria had presented opportunities to meet his appetites and capacities in a timely way, he would have remained in Austria without fear--whatever the poltical complexion of the place happened to be.
