 The Salps (Class Thaliacea)
The class Thaliacea contains about 70 species of small barrel shaped animals that spend their lives swimming slowly through the warmer seas of the world.
They swim as they feed, or visa versa because like all the Urochordates they are filter feeders and they have their inhalant and exhalent siphons at opposite ends of their bodies.
It is not expensive and should be thoroughly enjoyable, so if you like it please tell people about it, or better still give it to someone as a present for Christmas of a birthday.

 Lander University | Ecteinascidia
Tunicates may be benthic or planktonic and solitary or colonial.
Tunicata is traditionally divided into Ascidiacea (the benthic sea squirts in three taxa; Aplousobranchia, Phlebobranchia, and Stolidobranchia), Thaliacea (the pelagic salps, pyrosomes, and doliolids), and Appendicularia (the pelagic larvaceans).
Recent molecular evidence and reevaluation of morphological evidence, however, suggests that Ascidiacea is paraphyletic and Tunicata should be reorganized into three different higher taxa (Fig 29-32).

 Pelagic Tunicates
Those within two much smaller classes (Thaliacea and Appendicularia), with some representatives listed here, are unique among the tunicates in that they have abandoned the benthic existence in favor of a holoplanktonic lifestyle.
The salps (Class Thaliacea, Order Salpida) include the most commonly encountered pelagic tunicates.
Salps can form massive aggregations of millions of individuals that may play a significant role in marine ecosystems.

ASLO: Minorities in the Aquatic Sciences
I have been fortunate enough to work with doliolids, a unique taxon of the zooplankton community responsible for rapid colonization of neritic environments, especially off the coast of Georgia.
Doliolids (Tunicata, Thaliacea) have been over- looked as an important contributor to the marine food web because of the difficulty in obtaining life history information in the field and in the laboratory.
In my dissertation studies, I have been able to successfully quantify, in the laboratory, the feeding and growth of the only sexual stage in the lifecycle, and reproduction rates of one of the two asexual stages at four food concentrations and temperatures found on the southeastern continental shelf.

 Urochordates
Urochordates have a notochord that extends from just behind the head to the tail (rather than from head to tail; Urochordata means "tail-cord").
There are three classes within this subphylum: Ascidiacea, Thaliacea, and Larvacea.
