The Thames Division was formed in 1839 when the Marine Police Force was amalgamated with the Metropolitan Police Force.
At the subsequent inquest and inquiry, officials recommended that Thames Division should have steam launches as rowing galleys were inadequate for Police duty and the first two were commissioned in the mid 1880's.

The Marine Support Unit (MSU, commonly known by its prior name of Thames Division) is a Central Operations unit of the Metropolitan Police, that polices the River Thames in London.
Thames Division was formed in 1839 with the amalgamation of the Marine Police Force with the Metropolitan Police Force.
The subsequent inquest and inquiry recommended that Thames Division should have steam launches, as rowing galleys had shown themselves to be inadequate for police duty, and the first two were commissioned in the mid 1880s.

Thames Water is to spearhead efforts by a German utility firm to become a world beater, after agreeing terms in a "win-win" takeover deal.
Thames, which would be renamed "Thames Water, a division of RWE" after the deal, and RWE are a "complementary fit", Thames said on Monday in a document detailing the deal.
Thames, which in the UK serves London and the Thames Valley, ranks as the world's third largest listed water firm, in terms of population served, the document said.

Five police forces are involved in policing the River Thames with The Marine Support Unit of the Metropolitan Police (formerly known as Thames Division), having the responsibility of policing the 40 miles of the River Thames between Dartford Creek and Hampton Court.
Today, Thames Division, which was renamed the Marine Support Unit (MSU) in 2001, is part of an Operational Command Unit (OCU) called Specialist Support and is commanded by a Chief Inspector.
On average over 50 people lose their lives in the Thames each year and about 80% of these are by suicide (usually by jumping off one of the many bridges that cross the Thames).
