	Thamesmead
		Uniquely, although Thamesmead was a ‘new town’ and built on the scale of the early post-war towns, it was a new town built within a capital city.
		The plan for Thamesmead was that it should be a self-contained, balanced community with facilities for such things as recreation, housing and education fully provided for within the town itself.
		Thamesmead was developed and managed by the Greater London Council up until the abolition of the GLC in 1986.

		Thamesmead Central offers the majority of the town’s retail facilities – but these are woefully inadequate for a settlement of such proportions.
