The fact that Than Shwe, reported to be delusional and arrogant but a master military strategist, and Maung Aye, who is reported to make up for his lack of smarts with political ambition, do not get along is one of the military's worst kept secrets.
He explained that Than Shwe enjoyed the support of four of the country's regional commanders, Maung Aye was supported by six others and two were thought to be neutral.
Shwe Mann, the military's third-in-command, is known to have close ties with Than Shwe and is thought to act as a buffer between his two superiors as well as a regulator for Maung Aye's activities.

Than Shwe has not been seen on state television since August 20 when he met U.N. envoy and former Indonesian Foreign Minister Ali Alatas, but official newspapers on Wednesday reported his message of congratulations to Ukraine on its independence day.
Than Shwe, 73 and an expert in psychological warfare, seized the junta leadership in 1992 with the help of General Khin Nyunt, who was ousted as prime minister and military intelligence chief last October.
