  Hawkman: Hawk Avatar
Back on Thanagar Paran put his invention of Ninth Metal to use creating a guard of winged policemen called Wing Men, they were a glorious reminder of the heroism of Carter Hall and Paran borrowed many of the symbols and imagery of his Earth friend.
Since Paran Katar had returned to Thanagar decades ago their observations of Earth had been scant however when an alliance of alien warlords including the Dominators and Khunds decided to invade Earth their attention was renewed.
He accompanied the JLA into space and while with them saw the devastation of Thanagar first hand, he helped free the survivors from the aliens that sought to colonise the world but refused their offer to stay and lead them putting that part of his life permanently behind him.

Opinions 09 - Casualties of Retcon II: Hawkman (Apr 1999)
Therefore, DC created the planet Thanagar, the new Hawkman's birthplace; and made Hawkman a member of that planet's winged police, sent to earth to fight crime with a combination of advanced technology (his flight equipment) and archaic weapons.
Thus, Thanagar became a planet stripped of its Silver Age utopian character and of its isolation from terrestrial affairs; Thanagarians had lived on earth and had even participated in an attempted invasion of the earth during one of DC's disposable mega-crossover events.
Thanagar, by this time, ceased to reflect the fifties-sixties view of progress through technology and came to reflect more the concerns of a latter day, that saw science mainly as a purveyor of pollution and overpopulation.

But Thanagar is a planet which conquers and mines other worlds for their resources to maintain its high standard of living, and Hol realizes that this is wrong.
Katar Hol was a policeman from Thanagar, part of a force which used the hawk as their symbol, and also had a winged, gravity-defying harness.
A few years later, in a mystical ceremony on Thanagar where the Justice Society had travelled to learn the truth of the Thanagarian ship which had crashed in ancient Egypt, Carter Hall was reborn as his youthful self from the 1940s, except with brown hair instead of blond.

Paperback Reader : Review of Rann-Thanagar War 2 by David Bird
Rann and Thanagar have been odds for a very long time, during which they have made friends, allies, and enemies with the many worlds around them.
But in doing so she threw her own planet, Thanagar, out of its orbit, setting it on a course too close to its sun to remain habitable.
Events on Thanagar also impressed me a great deal, though in part, I confess, because it is something I was predicting throughout much of the Adam Strange story.

Fractal Matter » Blog Archive » Rann-Thanagar War Infinite Crisis Special
It starts in the middle of the conflict between Rann and Thanagar at which point the leadership on Thanagar, led by queen Blackfire of Tamaran, still wants to take over Rann and wipe out the heroic space hero coalition, led by Adam Strange, Hawkman, and Green Lantern.
While the battle goes on, a growing temporal rift is in the area and a group of earth based heroes, with Donna Troy at their head, ventures in to stop the rift from growing and hopefully alert someone that the universe might end.
The by the numbers thoughts are diminished because Gibbons is sly enough to give a long time reader something to cry about, and it reminded the reviewer why one can enjoy an old school superhero romp.

It was well that the King suspected treachery at this point, because King Thanagar attempted to slay the King with a poisoned dagger, while casting a spell which summoned six of the strange Kyrian assassins known as the Hyusarik.
Thanagar laughed as he died, promising that there was no cure to the poison which now flowed through King Mark's veins.

Hawkman and Hawkgirl are fighting a Phoenix on Earth when Adam Strange shows up to let them know that their home planet Thanagar was destroyed in the wake of the last issue of his mini-series.
Apparently Strange and the inhabitants of Rann were able to rescue many of the Thanagarians from a fiery doom, but many of the refugees are understandably a little choked about the whole affair.
Adam’s idea is that if he and the “Saviors of Thanagar” team-up, they’ll be a powerful symbol of peace to couteract the now powder-keg like social conditions on Rann.

 Hawkman FAQ Page
The only crime existent on Thanagar is theft, prompted by exposure to an alien race called the Manhawks, who instigated the practice of stealing for the thrill of it among the planet's lesser lights.
As Thanagar's most prominent policemen, Katar Hol and Shayera were dispatched to follow him in one of the newly built star-cruisers equipped to travel through hyperspace, allowing the ship to exceed the limitations of the speed of light.
This fact was seen both when the Thanagarian spaceship crashed in JSA #22 (before Thanagar had contact with Earth), though at this point, the language's alphabet was mainly Greek (though it did have the "not a subset of" symbol as one of its letters).

It has a cast of thousands and spans whole galaxies but this mini-series of a galactic war is becoming more coherent while remaining exciting and surprising.
War has broken out between Adam Strange's adopted planet of Rann and Hawkwoman's home planet of Thanagar and various alien races are trying to take advantage of the hostilities as various space-based DC characters try to get to the bottom of the conflict.
Newcomers may be a bit confused by who all these characters are-- the blue guy with the staff, the red guy with Kyle Rayner, etc. But old-timers will enjoy seeing these old faces again.

 TheFourthRail.com - Snap Judgments
Given the tenuous connection that Carter Hall has to Thanagar, and the almost non-existent one that Kendra has, it seems strange that Adam expects them to be personally and deeply affected by these events.
Ivan Reis, Marc Campos and John Kalisz really capture the epic scope and spectacle that Gibbons is going for, and while the script overcomplicates the political maneuvering, technobabble and factionalization, the art is always clear, even when we're looking at the chaos of a mass battle in progress.
Reis's take on the Ferry-tweaked version of the Adam Strange costume looks great, the splash pages of the destruction of Thanagar are stunning and the shots of the battle in progress are equally amazing.

Andar Pul had seduced the then 13-year-old Shayera I and the resultant pregnancy became quite the political scandal that threatened that could put her father's political activities to a hold.
Following their unsuccessful participation in the Invasion, Thanagar had established diplomatic relations with Earth and on the request of Darl Klus, the Thanagarian Ambassador on Earth, it was decided to send Shayera and Katar to Earth to accompany a Thanagarian cultural exhibit on a goodwill tour in order to be able to apprehend Byth.

Fanzing 44 - May 2002 - Who Was That Winged Man?
The reason for this migration was initially the pursuit of a criminal from their mutual home planet of Thanagar and they then stayed to study Earth's police methods.
A lengthy story arc during the mid-80s went so far as to have the people of Thanagar become the main antagonists of Hawkman and Hawkwoman, who for several years were depicted as waging a covert war to defend Earth from invasion by their fellows; this entire period must be summarily declared non-canonical.
Since this replacement Hawkman's true loyalties continued to lie with Thanagar, unlike the Silver Age version, that story's requirement that he defuse a bomb used by Thanagar during the Invasion is impossible to meet.

Grovel: graphic novel news and reviews » Countdown to Infinite Crisis: Rann-Thanagar War
If you thought the Countdown to Infinite Crisis series might just be concerning earthly superhero matters, you’d be mistaken - this shakedown of the DC Comics universe is set to impact on distant planets too.
Rann and Thanagar are two such examples - Thanagar the home of Hawkman’s people, and Rann the world that Adam Strange was Zeta-beamed to.
With peace between the two planets already balanced on a knife edge, it doesn’t take much to tip the two worlds into a bitter war, with numerous third parties also sticking their noses in for their own political power gain.
