Led Zeppelin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1974, Led Zeppelin launched their own record label called Swan Song, named after one of only five songs that the band never recorded for commercial release (the track was re-tooled as "Midnight Moonlight" by Page's post-Zeppelin band The Firm on their first album).
In November of 1970, Led Zeppelin's record label, Atlantic Records, released "Immigrant Song" as a single against the band's wishes (Atlantic had earlier released an edited version of "Whole Lotta Love" which cut the 5:34 song to 3:10).
Led Zeppelin is universally regarded as the most influential hard rock band of all time (only equalled by Black Sabbath.) Their lineup became the template for many hard rock bands that followed.

Led Zeppelin's 1973 U.S. tour also broke all box office records throughout the country (many of which had been set by the Beatles), and by 1975, the group's immense ticket and album sales established them as the most popular rock-n-roll group in the world.
Throughout rock-n-roll's diverse history, Led Zeppelin is the one group that has risen above the rest, and to this day, remains one of the most influential, inspiring, and popular groups of all time.
In February 1969, Led Zeppelin released their first album and, in less than two months, this album reached Billboards top ten list.

So for you to say that Led Zeppelin wasn't "a hell of an original band" is proposterous since they created a style all their own that no one can ever match.
However, I think Led Zeppelin is the one band that was able to rise above their sometimes banal lyrics with their sheer musical ability.
Zeppelin was essentially a derivative blues cover band at their essence, yeah, but they were the virtual essence of larger than life, epic, overblown and mysterious hard rock.

Rock and Roll (Led Zeppelin song) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Rock and Roll" is a song by British rock band Led Zeppelin, which was first released as the second track of their untitled fourth album in 1971.
As the title suggests, the song is based on one of the most popular structures in rock and roll, the 12 bar blues progression (in A).
The bridge of the song is highlighted by a blistering guitar solo by Page, and builds to a fever pitch culminating in a final drum break by Bonham at the song's conclusion.

Led Zeppelin II is one of the greatest sophomore albums in the history of rock and roll.
Led Zeppelin II is an album of Jimmy Page riffs so huge, and John Paul Jones/John Bonham rhythms so deep, that the heavy metal genre this classic helped create has tried for decades to catch up, mostly without success.
Led Zeppelin II, for the most part, follows the same blues-based rock stylings of its predecessor, but it throws in just enough new elements to keep things sounding fresh.

The death of rock 'n' roll? By Alex Abramovich
When Black first meets his school kids, who are young enough to be Dylan's grandkids, Led Zeppelin takes a backseat to Latin, and rock 'n' roll is as sexy and redemptive, in their eyes, as a square dance at a retirement home.
And, for all its references to Zeppelin, Sabbath, and AC/DC, his latest has impeccable indie credentials: The cast was coached by Jim O'Rourke, the avant-rocker who produced Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and now plays with Sonic Youth.
But School of Rock was written with a new breed of adults in mind—and their driving fear isn't that the youth of tomorrow will fall prey to what Frank Sinatra once described as "the martial marching music of every side-burned delinquent." It's that the kids might never get their rocks off in the first place.
