"thanks for the ether" on the other hand simply had morbid songs topping it off with "shirtwaist fire", the epitome of this "concrete irrationality" and it being song number, there really wasn't much to look forward to in the album after that...
i really enjoy the morbitity of "thanks for the ether" and i like all the songs on it, but i just guess on a more critical standpoint "how we quit the forest" is just so much more emotionally touching and mature of an album than rasputina's first one...
> >"thanks for the ether" on the other hand simply had morbid songs topping it >off with "shirtwaist fire", the epitome of this "concrete irrationality" and you know, you'd probably make a good music critic, cos your analysis is very similar to what i hear all the time in music magazines.

The interplay of three cellos on Thanks For The Ether (Columbia) is one of weaving, hypnotic voices, made all the more complex by the sweet voice floating over the top (with the most amazing vibrato I've ever heard, by the way).

Rasputina's 1996 debut, Thanks for the Ether is a rare accomplishment.
With their strange goth-pop instrumentation and corseted image, Rasputina have all the trappings of novelty, but Creager proves herself a supremely talented songwriter and lyricist throughout Thanks for the Ether.
Creager is no cutup, she keeps on message, insuring Thanks for the Ether is never fundamentally comedic or even ironic.

Clearly the most exciting release-as far as new and truly alternative recordings go-is "Thanks for the Ether" by Rasputina.
Rasputina is 3 cellists (that's CELLISTS) who pulled in a drummer to record "Thanks for the Ether".
Also helpful to prepare to listen to Rasputina are the titles of some songs: "The Donner Party", "Kate Moss", "Five Fleas", and "Transylvanian Concubine." Kurt Ralske of Ultra Vivid Scene has taken notice of Rasputina as well as the Greenwich Village crowd.

So, I've suspected it for awhile, ever since I read a comment by Melora in the newsbunny way back when they were recording this album last year, but I think Melora and Hollis' father, Sebastian, broke up.
She didn't thank him in the sleevenotes, and like I said there was that funny comment in the newsbunny, I can't remember it now but it gave me that impression.
I feel only so-so about their last few albums, but I adore Thanks For The Ether.

 Ink 19 :: Rasputina
The cello is often distorted and overdriven, making for a coarse and nasty (in a good way) sound that complements the angelic vocals of Melora Creager.
There is more late-1800's southern American imagery on this album than in the past, and it comes off rather campy and silly; several tracks are wasted on pointless tributes to this era.
The majority of the lyrics are uninspired and tired, and I found myself digging out my copy of Thanks for the Ether to try to wake myself up.

And ironically, although their upcoming sophomore album How We Quit the Forest is creepier than their oft- misunderstood debut Thanks for the Ether, it's also more rock- oriented and accessible.
"People get this hands- off kind of feeling, so that [Thanks for the Ether] was really acoustic and kind of tenuous.
I mean, we play with distortion pedals, so you record it that way.

The concept of the forest is part of the main theme running through the disc.
While Rasputina's first album, "Thanks For The Ether," dealt with historical situations and characters, the new album is based around fairy tales; how they're created and disemeninated, and "the secret meanings" behind them.
Marilyn Manson-remixed "Transylvanian Regurgitations" ep, the use of different types of effects and arrangements truly break new ground for cello-based music.

Melora, Julia, and Agnieszka are Rasputina, an all cello band who are fascinated with nineteenth century romanticism and the use of fantasy as a means of expression.
Rasputina, with all the fanfare their foresisters would have appreciated, takes these dreams and makes them their reality.
