I had no idea whether she even wanted to hear from me, but knowing she and I have shared the same kind of deep-cutting pain was enough to get me over the hump and make the call.
After the other church-goers were done talking to me and introducing me to different groups of people, I went up front to try a “healing.” The skeptic in me stopped that from being of any use, but the minister who administered it was kind and understanding.
A small part of me hopes this idea is actually right, for a number of reasons… foremost is I am quite entertained by the notion that there is a form of existence where I’m still coherent but I don’t suffer anymore.

She then gave me another perfunctory admonition about safe sex, while I was imagining she wanted to tell me that I had narrowly escaped God’s wrath.
At that moment, it made me realize that I just might have prejudged this woman, and perhaps she truly was concerned for me, and that perhaps I was the bigot.

At the beginning of April right as I was coming off my "back surgery vacation," I wrote a kitchen sink blog that, amongst other things, dragged consumer-targeted global postioning solutions like those from Tom-Tom through the mud.
But, at $500 to $700, I found the pricing for something like that to be outrageously expensive when compared to the $10 map book you can buy at the local gas station that could very well be more up-to-date.
I felt a little uneasy about drawing that conclusion after several people wrote to me to say they thought I was off-base.

Herskowitz's taped insights were verified to the satisfaction of editors at the Houston Chronicle, yet the story failed to gain broad mainstream coverage, primarily because news organization executives expressed concern about introducing such potent news so close to the election.
Editors told me they worried about a huge backlash from the White House and charges of an "October Surprise."
But today, as public doubts over the Iraq invasion grow, and with the Downing Street papers adding substance to those doubts, the Herskowitz interviews assume singular importance by providing profound insight into what motivated Bush—personally—in the days and weeks following 9/11.
