Thaxted is a picturesque and historic small town in the north of the county of Essex, England.
In 1556 Thaxted was granted a formal Charter of Incorporation by Philip and Mary, and became a Borough.
Some commentators have described Thaxted Church as 'The Cathedral of Essex', because of its beauty and impressive size, perhaps forgetting in their enthusiasm that that honour was accorded to Chelmsford Cathedral in 1914.

Thaxted is in the hundred of Dunmow, 44 miles from London by Harlow, Hatfield Broad Oak, and Dunmow.
There is a free grammar-school, which contained, in 1833, 30 boys on the foundation and 30 others whose education was paid for by their parents.
Near Thaxted is the ancient hall, Horeham-hall, the seat of Sir William Smith : it is a castellated gothic mansion partly covered with ivy.

 Thaxted - Thaxted Morris Men
Thaxted Morris Men, as they exist today, were formed in 1911 by Mrs Miriam Noel, wife of the then vicar, Fr Conrad Noel.
The six founder clubs were Cambridge, East Surrey, Greensleves (London), Letchworth, Oxford and Thaxted, and in Thaxted in 1934, the Morris Ring was instituted.
Thaxted have hosted 65 meetings and there have been 30 elected Squires (one died before assuming office).

Built by the guild of Cutlers in 1390, this magnificent building is the centrepiece of the chocolate box village of Thaxted.
Used as the head quarters of the guild, the open plan ground floor was designed as meeting and trading point for the village, whilst the upstairs provided private office and residential space for the warden.
