Thayer Valve - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Thayer Axial-Flow Valve is a replacement for the traditional rotary valve found on trombones with F attachments.
Invented by Orla Ed Thayer in 1976, it was the biggest advance in the design of the trombone since the rotary valve was added (creating the F attachment) in the mid-1800s.
When engaged, a rotary valve deflects the air flow through the instrument at least four times, and at least twice at rather sharp angles, leading to a stuffy response and audible tone colour changes, compared to the "open" instrument.

 Valves
Early in the 20th century the valve was introduced to the trombone.
Originally the second valve was a dependant one, with the combined pitch of E flat, which completed the chromatic.
The most logical key for this new independant valve became G flat, combined to D. Dependant horns remained popular, becuase of the poor quality of the valves, the sound and feel of only one valve in constant use was preferable.

The beauty of the Thayer valve is that the air only bends 30 degrees when you engage the valve.
Thayer valve recalibrations are easily done by replacing the bearing and adjusting the top plate.
The Thayer valve is a major part of our trombone design because it offers zero distortion and free-blowing qualities that our competitors have tried to copy (which, we have to say, makes us feel a little flattered).

Attachments are available with the Shires Rotary Valve (an improved rotary design similar to the Greenhoe valve; Greenhoes are no longer offered as an option on Shires trombones) or Thayer-based valve (Steve Shire's axial flow valves incorporate his own improvements on the Thayer).
The Shires philosophy is that airtightness of the valve is essential to the response and centered feel of an instrument, and it is a point of pride with Shires that all valve assemblies are tested for air-tightness and accurate tolerances (it seems that some other custom manufacturers do not conduct such testing).
Valve options include a specially-developed short pressure action design as well as the usual Thayers and Hagmanns.

Douglas Yeo FAQ: Bass Trombone Valve Systems
Because the second valve is on the F attachment, depressing the valve lever has no effect unless the thumb valve is depressed.
Conventional valved instruments went through a long history of experimentation before the currently accepted convention of 2-1-3-4 semitones on the 1st through 4th valves was accepted.
Prior to the advent of double valve basses, the player who needed a low B would pull the tuning slide to retune the F attachment to E. This was an obvious starting point for the second valve -- push a button instead of pulling a slide.

 Specifications of Current Trombone Models
Many people (myself included) find the conventional rotary valve on the 42B and 42C to be stuffy compared to that on the Conn 88H - the reason for this, apparently, is that the Bach rotor ports are comparatively small in bore.
The most common complaint about Holton bass bones is that their rotary valve sections do not produce a sound as good as those of their competitors (due to undersized bore in the valve ports and attachment tubing, although the resulting additional resistance is said by some to aid the production of low notes).
These instruments (namely the Symphony 1600 bass trombone series and the CR-variants of the Signature 1500 series) and valves are currently receiving rave reviews, and apparently compare well with the likes of Shires, Edwards, Rath, etc. And it seems that further instruments based (and improved) on other classic designs are in the works...

Actually, Orla Ed Thayer invented the Thayer valve and it is the one that they currently use on Getzen trombones.
Bach stole the name Thayer and began producing it`s own version of the axial flow valve, which is just the technical term for that style of valve.
The valves that Bach is producing are of terrible quality, with some having as much as a millimetre of lateral movement.

Valves are proprietery designs, and are the fastest and best sealing on the market.
The Shires axial flow valve is notably higher in quality and action than the other axial valves you see on the factory horns.
These valves may need oiling and cleaning more often, the lever throw is a little longer, and some players get bothered by the intrusion in to their neck due to the large size of this valve.

On most instruments a rotary valve is used to control the flow of air.
Some horns have different valves that move the air less of an angle and making them more "free blowing" and "open." The Thayer valve, the Haggman valve, the Greenhoe valve, and several other variations all are used to make the turning of the air into the tubing less of a hard angle.
Engage the valve and place the slide in second position and it is about the same as seventh position.

 Gary Greenhoe Says:
The important change with an axial flow valve is actually from the length of the sound path through the valve itself.
The cone of the axial valve is actually floating in the wall of the casing.
The next problem incurred with the advent of axial flow valves, was to add mass to the instrument to regain some of that dissipated energy.

I have the exact same model horn, which I recieved yesterday with the balanced valve disposed of, and an Orla Ed Thayer valve installed (on of Ed's valves).
I never spent a lot of tike on the K valve before I had it converted, but I think it sat further back towards the tuning slide, and the bottom part of the valve used to dig into my neck.
The first valve is touching my jaw, so it wont move further downwards, and the second valve is resting underneath the bone behind my ear, so it won't move further upwards, which means I can't adjust the horn to the left; my natural playing position.

This valve looks like a standard trombone rotary valve, but the casing is about 10% bigger, and instead of the inside rotor being machined from a chunk of brass, it's made with individual tubes inside, much like the method of making a trumpet valve.
The.547 valved horn was snappier and faster responding, but the.562 valved horn has a bigger more modern orchestral sound, and just seemed to make more sound, especially in the low range.
I think this is because the neckpipe on a trombone expands right from the slide connector area, and the larger valve lets it expand faster, whereas the smaller valve keeps the bore small until after the valve.

Hickeys Music Center - Bach Trombones
Bach Stradivarius 42 series trombones can now be purchased with Thayer Valve systems (42T) which eliminate sharp crook tube bends within the rotor itself, allowing for a free and umimpeded flow of the air column.
This valve design revolutionized the trombone beginning in the middle 1980's, and has been a popular option for pro players ever since.
The valve's unique design, coupled with standard open wrap valve tubing, prevents constriction of the airflow and thus makes the horn more even throughout the valve register and easier to blow.

It is easy to take these valves apart but one must be careful to not: 1) drop the valves, 2) accidentally use F valve in Gb casing (on bass), and 3) drop oil onto your wife's new carpet.

In the last 15 years there have been some technological innovations, not the least of which is the Thayer axial-flow valve.
It’s a cone shaped valve which, instead of doing the 90 degree turn against the direction of air flow, gives the air only a slight change in trajectory as it’s diverted into the F attachment tubing.
Combining this with the Thayer valve is probably the most state of the art a trombone gets.

Floppy mitral valve–mitral valve prolapse (FMV-MVP) is often considered a genetic disorder of connective tissue.
MVP is diagnosed by observing abnormal motion of the mitral valve leaflets relative to their surroundings.
In a study of 237 retrospectively identified asymptomatic subjects with MVP followed for a mean of 6.2 years, Nishimura found a survival rate no different from the actuarial rate of a matched population.
