  VDH's Private Papers::History and the Movie "300"
he phrase “300 Spartans” evokes not only the ancient battle of Thermopylae, but also the larger idea of fighting for freedom against all odds — a notion subsequently to be enshrined through some 2500 years of Western civilization.
Among the many Greek contingents was a special elite force of 300 Spartans under their King Leonidas —; a spearhead that offered the other Greeks at Thermopylae some promise that they could still bar the advance of the vastly superior invader.

Frank Miller 300 Movie vs. 300 Spartans History - Battle of Thermopylae
300 graphic novelist Frank Miller explained this by saying, "Another liberty I took was, they all had plumes, but I only gave a plume to Leonidas, to make him stand out and identify him as a king." Plumes were the red bands of horsehair that were affixed to the top of the helmets.
Historians who study the 300 Spartans history are positive that the battle took place in 480 B.C. They only argue over whether it happened in August or mid-September of that year.
The "we shall fight in the shade" line from the movie is based on a phrase that a Spartan soldier named Dienekes uttered, after he was informed that the Persian arrows would be so numerous as "to blot out the sun".

300 Spartans - Fighting Traidtion in Western Martial Heriatge
Much like the near-legendary 300 Spartans battling to the last at Thermopylae, throughout its history Western Civilization has produced warriors who were free citizens willing to close with the enemy in battle and seek his annihilation.
For the Spartans at Thermopylae, we may note there was a significant distinction at work between the two sides that made all the difference in what they did and why they were willing to do it.
These are things which, much as for the 300 Spartans who with courage and sacrifice strived to persevere at Thermopylae, have long motivated warrior fighting men within Western Civilization.

The 300 Spartans gives the opportunity to admire the tactics and fight scenes of the Spartans which is illustrated with panache for the early 60's genre of movie making and the frustrations of the Persians in dealing with the Greeks is felt keenly as the movie moves towards the climax.

He led a small army of 300 - his personal guard, basically - to join Athens and the rest of Greece in the battle, with the promise that the greater portion of the Spartan army would be allowed to leave as soon as the religious council said it was okay.
The Spartans took up a position in the Pass of Thermopylae, a narrow mountain way that the Persians had to travel through and that would render their massive numbers a deadly hindrance while the Spartans, hopelessly outnumbered, would be able to sprint about and rather easily beat thousands upon thousands of their enemies.
The tale of the 300 Spartans (and let's not forget that some Thespians and Thebians stayed behind as well), then, became one of the greatest legends of inspiration ever told, and even if it has some clunky dialogue and stiff acting, it's more than enough story to make for a damn enjoyable film.

The 300 Spartans, made in 1961, has an overstated cold war subtext--there's much talk of freedom vs. slavery--and there are a few too many shots of armored men marching through the Greek countryside, but the historical conflict has a fundamentally stirring quality.
The firmly religious Spartans were unable to send their full contingent of soldiers due to a holy festival (they were curiously tardy throughout their history in such situations).

  Sparta Pages: "300" Review
300 is only one of a tiny, tiny handful of illustrated treatments of the Thermopylae epic of 480 B.C., when the stand of King Leonidas and his bodyguard of 300 picked Spartans inspired all Greece and succeeding generations of freedom lovers.
But 300 is a mixed bag, and I expect reactions will vary, even within comics fandom (where Miller, creator of the "Batman: The Dark Knight" concept and other innovative works, is something akin to a demigod).
The Spartan characters are rather laconic in speech (as opposed to the usual superhero bombast), and many of the famous Spartan aphorisms are worked into the dialogue.

 300 (2007): Reviews
Based on the epic graphic novel by Frank Miller, 300 is a ferocious retelling of the ancient Battle of Thermopylae in which King Leonidas (Butler) and 300 Spartans fought to the death against Xerxes and his massive Persian army.
300 may not offer masterful storytelling in a conventional sense, but it's hard to beat as a spectacle and that makes it worthwhile viewing for all but the most squeamish of potential audience members.
300 is at its best when it settles for purely visceral thrills, such as Leonidas' battle against a hulking warrior twice the size of a normal man. The movie's broad strokes are all superlative: It's the details that keep 300 from being anything more than a striking curiosity.

The Spartans in "300" aren't the Spartans I've learned about: deeply conservative, suspicious to the point of paranoia, fascistic and totalitarian, willing sacrificers of children, oppressors of their own subjects...
But the Spartans could have been shown to be even more “gay” than they were had the filmmakers included the historical anecdote of Spartan warriors lovingly combing out their long hair before battle.
300, at least so it seems to me without having seen it yet, is similar to the Passion of Christ in a way: both movies express values that are completely antagonistic to the prevailing PC ideology and thus are huge successes at the box office.

As the rest of Greece debated on whether or not to send soldiers, the Spartans were left to hold the Persians off on their own - if they failed, then the south of Greece would be open to invasion.
The 300 Spartans is a very accurate account of what happened (of course there are inaccuracies but one must expect that from a film version of a true event) and really gets across the message of bravery and self-sacrifice, especially with the finale.
Final Verdict: The 300 Spartans may be ideal if you're studying Ancient Greece, but if you just fancy watching an old classic flick to waste away a couple of hours, this is the one to watch....if you can get hold of it.
