The consoles were manufactured according to specifications created by The 3DO Company, and were originally designed by Dave Needle and RJ Mical of New Technology Group.
The 3DO Company also designed a next-generation console called the M2, which was to use a PowerPC 602 processor, but the company abandoned the console business and sold the technology to Matsushita, who never brought the system to the market.
The 3DO Company then became a software publisher, producing such games as the Army Men franchise, until it filed for bankruptcy and liquidated its assets in 2003.

May 28, 2003 - According to inside sources, every last employee at 3DO (the company responsible for the ill-fated console of the same name as well as the entire Army Men franchise) was let go earlier today and the company as a whole has filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy.
This comes as a shock, to be sure, but industry pundits have been witnessing a slow decline of the company for years, so while somewhat surprising in the way the closure came about, the end of Trip Hawkins' baby is not entirely unexpected.

It's a sad story, but today I stumbled across a website message board called Gamers Against 3DO which made for funny reading, it starts about a year before 3DO went bust and apparently they were in trouble for a long time, there are all sorts of amusing abusive messages there.
3DO also came up with the heroes of might and magic series, which was pretty good for it's time.
