The Academy and College of Philadelphia was the first American academy.
Franklin drew up the constitution for the academy, and on November 13, 1749, he was appointed its president.
On September 13, 1791, State legislation united the University of the State of Pennsylvania with the College Academy and Charitable School of Philadelphia, under the name of the Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania.

 About the Books of Isaac Norris
Shortly after Dickinson College was chartered in 1783, John Dickinson pledged some five hundred volumes to his namesake institution from the library of his father-in-law.
In 1946 James Phillips, Curator of Dickinsoniana at the College, read a paper before the annual meeting of the Pennsylvania Historical Association in which he described the early library of the College and the provenance of many of the volumes that remain.
By combining college funds with financial support from the Pennsylvania Bicentennial Commission and the Pew Memorial Trust, the cataloging task was begun in 1974.

 Benjamin West (1738-1820), University of Pennsylvania Archives
It was during this time that West produced this sketch of David James Dove, then the colorful English master of the Academy of Philadelphia.
West's earliest professional work was in the line of portraiture; he was soon able to establish himself as a portrait painter in Philadelphia, and then in 1759 in New York City.
As his fame grew, West became one of the founders of the Royal Academy in 1768, serving as its president from 1782 to 1815.
