 The Accidental Tourist (1988)
The Accidental Tourist DVD offers viewers many of the standard extras: deleted scenes (13 of them!), the film's theatrical trailer, and "It's Like Life," a segment featuring film clips and interviews with Davis, Turner, and the film's writer-director Lawrence Kasdan.
Whenever the ingratiating Davis is onscreen, The Accidental Tourist springs to vibrant life; she injects a welcome blast of personality into this emotionally muted film, which is far too low-key for its own good.
In 1988, the New York Film Critics Circle named The Accidental Tourist the year's Best Picture.

The Accidental Tourist certainly dwells in the lengthy scenes of Hurt's character's loneliness, and much of John Williams' score for the film mirrors that introverted reflection.

WALTER PHILLIPS GALLERY - Roy Kiyooka: Accidental Tourist
Accidental Tourist includes soundscapes, film and video works as well as slide installations and sequential photographic works — pivotal pieces in the development of, and experimentation with, a multi-disciplinary practice.
Accidental Tourist proposes Kiyooka as a tourist and explorer, displaced both in Canada as a child of Japanese immigrants, and a family interned during WWII and yet an outsider in Japan, the homeland of his parents.
The Walter Phillips Gallery is proud to present this work and is indebted to Kiyooka’s daughter Fumiko Kiyooka and Vancouver gallerist Catriona Jeffries for their support of this project; and to the MacKenzie Art Gallery and Vancouver Art Gallery for the generous loan of work from their collections.

 Williams: The Accidental Tourist
The Accidental Tourist, Williams's score for the 1989 film starring William Hurt, falls somewhere in between.
Williams is hardly averse to overloading his scores with several barely-altered versions of the same thematic material, but The Accidental Tourist surely takes the cake, as just about every cue is very similar to one that has gone before.
The opening cue is very sombre, with oboe and piano creating a mood that is at once gloomy; "Maconi Alone" begins in a similar vein, though the middle section of the cue marks the first presentation of the excellent main theme.

Film Music on the Web CD Reviews Feb 1999:John WILLIAMS Stepmom
With kaleidoscopic musical effects recycled from "Always" (plus a metamorphosis from 'Follow Me' into 'Isebel's Horse and Buggy'), light comedic effects from "Sabrina," motifs lifted from "The Accidental Tourist," synthesizer elements carried from "Sleepers," a theme from an episode of "Amazing Stories," it plays like a compilation of John Williams' Dullest Hits.
The music is subtly Ravelian impressionistic too and the entry of the guitar softly tinges the music appropriately Spanish-coloured.
The music for this cue chugs along happily and comically but there is also an edge as we share the women's views and conflicting emotions once more.

 Lawrence Kasdan
Kasdan’s son, Jake Kasdan, has followed in his father’s footsteps, starting off as an actor in his father’s films The Big Chill, Silverado and The Accidental Tourist, then moving on to direct TV series such as Freaks and Geeks and Grosse Pointe, as well as the feature film Orange County (2002).
Kasdan bounced back with the romantic comedy French Kiss (1995), starring Meg Ryan as a woman who wants to get her straying fiancé back at any cost, even if it means having to follow him to France.
Kasdan decided to try his hand at stage directing in the fall of 1995 with John Patrick Shanley’s Four Dogs & a Bone at the Geffen Playhouse, but he later returned to the big screen with the comedy Mumford (1999).

Although the film was reasonably popular, Pullman toiled along in second-rate films (excepting The Accidental Tourist) until 1992, when he was cast as Geena Davis' husband in A League of Their Own and as the doctor who tries to convince Bridget Fonda not to have breast enlargement in Singles.
With his ability to play bottom-dwellers thus established, Pullman went back to playing nice guys in 1995, when he starred as Bullock's love interest in While You Were Sleeping and Christina Ricci's father in the hit family film Casper.
Born in rural Hornell, New York, on December 17, 1953, Pullman was the sixth of seventh children.

True that Stepmom does not have a theme that is immediately arresting and memorable; rather, this score is subtly understated with long-breathed melodies and easy-flowing impressionistic music that, nonetheless, should invidiously invade the listener's affections on repeated hearings.
Stepmom is not top drawer John Williams but it is nevertheless treasurable.

 Biography for John Williams (I)
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) brought about his third Oscar, and The River (1984), Empire of the Sun (1987), The Accidental Tourist (1988), and Born on the Fourth of July (1989) added variety to the 1980s, as he returned to television with work on Amazing Stories and themes for NBC, including NBC Nightly News.
What's more, he al most singlehandedly returned the "big" orchestral film score to favor in the late 1970s.
Intending to retire, the composer's output became sporadic during the 1990s, particularly after the exciting Jurassic Park (1993) and the masterful, Oscar-winning Schindler's List (1993).
