THE ADVENTURES OF BUCKAROO BANZAI ACROSS THE EIGHTH DIMENSION - SPECIAL EDITION DVD
Buckaroo (Peter Weller) is a rock star, physicist, comic book superhero, brain surgeon, cult figure, and Eastern aesthete--the product of an interracial union between two brilliant scientists and the discoverer of the Oscillation Overthruster (shades of Back to the Future), which facilitates the travel between ours and the eighth dimension.
Beginning with Buckaroo's mixed parentage and proceeding through the arrival of good "fl" aliens ("Lectroids") that resemble Rastafarians and have as their first Earth contact a pair of redneck poachers, Eighth Dimension shows itself to be unusually sensitive--particularly for an eighties film--to racial issues.
Eighth Dimension is not a conventionally successful film: its pacing lags, its narrative is confused and crippled by sloppy edits, and though its self-consciousness might be interpreted as satire, too often it just plays as unpleasantly glib.

And the direction and approach is equally exciting: rather than annoy us with underfinanced special effects that pretend to be Lucasfilm quality, the director revels in his low budget, using conk shells as models for space ships and populating alien ship interiors with tubes, pipes, rods and duct tape.

Award winning physicist, brain surgeon and rock musician Buckaroo Banzai (Peter Weller), while test-driving the astounding jet car, plugs in his Oscillation Overthruster and actually drives through a mountain via the eighth dimension, successfully completing the experiment which killed his father and mother in the 50s.
Buckaroo Banzai is filled with off-kilter dialogue, sly Zen humor, and a frankly astonishing cast, including Ellen Barkin, Jeff Goldblum and Christopher Lloyd.

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai: Across the 8th Dimension is one of the most agreeably insane movies ever made.
Buckaroo Banzai hurls you right into the middle of its comic-book universe and keeps going at a breakneck pace.
The story is told in an overtly complex way that makes the viewer work hard to follow it, it downplays blockbuster-style action in favor of idea-driven science fiction, and the proceedings are driven by a stylized sort of humor that isn't for every viewer.

Weller's Buckaroo is intelligent and self-assured-- watching him you get the feeling there's always something going on in his head, and always a step ahead of the next guy-- and it's his ability to convey the complexities of the character that makes him believable, and his incredible exploits seem credible.
Our hero, Buckaroo Banzai (played with commendable restraint by Peter Weller, who still looks at times as though he can barely contain himself)has just gone through a mountain in Nevada with his jet car, aided by his Oscillation Overthruster, and has become the darling of the entire U.S. population.
Buckaroo and his band - quite literally a band, they play rock-and-roll gigs when they're not saving the world - the Hong Kong Cavaliers (honestly, I'm not making any of this stuff up) are recruited to oust the Red Lectroids from Earth or else -or the Black Lectroids will take serious steps.

THE ADVENTURES OF BUCKAROO BANZAI ACROSS THE EIGHTH DIMENSION
Buckaroo's interdimensional experiments with his Operation Overthruster throw him (and the Earth) straight into the middle of an alien war, and before you know it, he's got just a few hours to save the world.
While the film features some nice comic moments (as in chuckle-chuckle, not ha-ha), it drunkenly veers between the deadpan acting of Peter Weller who is even more mechanical than he was in Robocop and the over-the-top John Lithgow (Third Rock from the Sun, 2010) never finding the right tone to settle on.
Ultimately, Buckaroo Banzai is a lacklustre affair that could have been a whole lot better than it is. Apparently it has somewhat of a fervent cult following, but I suspect that its followers are more in love with its title than its actual content.

Plot: Neurosurgeon, rock star, comic book hero and crimefighter Buckaroo Banzai follows his lengthy list of accomplishments by using his invention of an experimental fusion overdrive unit to drive a car through a mountainside into the eighth dimension.
But at the press conference afterwards, Buckaroo is interrupted by a call from the Black Lectoids from the Planet Ten in an orbiting spaceship, who give him an electric shock that enables him to see the presence of several invading Red Lectoids disguised in the audience.
The Red Lectoids, who all have the first name John, want to steal the fusion overdrive unit so that they can return to the eighth dimension, having been stranded on Earth since 1938, arriving during the Orson Welles 'War of the Worlds' broadcast, using the hysteria to help cover their arrival.
