The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert is a 1994 Australian film about two drag queens, and a transsexual woman driving across the outback from Sydney to Alice Springs in a large bus they have named Priscilla.
After persuading her friends and fellow performers Bernadette Bassenger- a recently bereaved transsexual woman and Felicia Jollygoodfellow- an irritatingly flamboyant and obnoxious drag queen, to join her, and the three set out for Alice Springs in a large tour bus which they christened "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert".
In the opening ceremony of the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, a float shaped as a giant Stiletto heel -- as inspired from one of the most striking images from the film -- was paraded around the stadium as a tribute to the gay community in Sydney.

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert is about the most fun you can have with three guys who like to dress up as women.
The dance numbers are lavish and fun to watch, whether they're performed in the middle of the desert, atop a bar in some out-of-the-way town, or on a stage in Sydney.
The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert is a great deal more appealing than many might suppose it to be.

 A Lighthearted `Priscilla'
`The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert'' is an episodic story of three drag queens from Sydney -- one of them actually a transsexual -- making their way into the interior of Australia in a garishly painted bus they've dubbed Priscilla.
Drag queens tend to be extremely lighthearted when they're looking at other people, but when they look at themselves you often get ``Torch Song Trilogy.'' This film has the confidence to poke fun, affectionately, at the world of drag, its aesthetic and its pretensions.
Nondrag queens may have trouble understanding how the sight of a man standing on top of a bus dressed as a woman, with pink smoke blowing all around him and opera music blasting, qualifies as a decisive and enormously amusing aesthetic statement.

I thought of that while I was watching "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert," which stars Terence Stamp in drag.
That sets up the introduction of Priscilla, which is the name of the recycled school bus which doubles as their dressing room and living quarters.
I happened to see "Easy Rider" (1969) again at about the same time I saw "Priscilla," and it occurred to me that the structures were similar: The nonconformist heroes, whether hippies or drag queens, were taking a dangerous chance by making a road trip into reactionary territory.

The "Priscilla" of the title is actually a run-down school bus, which they paint pink during their journey halfway across Australia.
Their destination is a resort, where they are booked to perform their drag-queen act, which consists largely of lip-syncing old disco tunes (Abba, Gloria Gaynor, etc.).
"The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" is rated R for considerable foul language, as well as some partial nudity, violence and drugs.

"Priscilla," an Australian road/backstage movie by Stephan Elliott, is about three Sydney drag queens (Hugo Weaving, Guy Pearce and Terence Stamp) who take a tour bus (called Priscilla) across the enormous Outback to play at a resort.
The journey, full of bitchy banter on board (Pearce is a loud one) and frequent stops, has its episodic incidents: When Priscilla breaks down, for instance, Stamp becomes involved with car mechanic Bill Hunter, an old fan of the veteran transsexual's stage days of yore.

THE ADVENTURES OF PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT (1994) Terence Stamp, Hugo Weaving, Guy Pearce
The film shows its inner-city roots (it was produced by a Sydney socialite and had an advisory panel of popular Sydney drag queens) with its presumption that all rural people are hick, violent and stupid – just because they don’t feel comfortable and familiar with a completely alien culture.
A scene from the film was even re-enacted as part of the closing ceremony of the Sydney Olympic Games, when hundreds of marching drag queens filed into Stadium Australia behind a silver-clad colleague sailing along on top of a bus.
Priscilla met with some excitement after its release, as observers noted the box office potential of a drag queen movie and celebrated the increased tolerance of the mainstream.

Elliott's film is a colourful exploration into the Australian gay culture, tracing the lives of three drag performers as they make a daring trip from the security of Sydney, Australia's gay capital, to the close-knit, small town areas of outback Northern Territory.
The chemistry between the three characters is palpable at times as they bicker their way through the desert landscape in Priscilla, a run-down old bus.
The overwhelmingly gaudy costumes of the drag queens is juxtaposed with the rich reds of the sunburnt plains on a number of occasions, giving rise to glorious, saturated shots that recall the images of isolation presented by Nicholas Roeg in Walkabout (1971).

One could say that Stephen Elliott's "Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert," is a film asserting gay rights and the "alternative" lifestyle.
The adventures begin when Teke (Mitzi when in drag), played by Hugo Weaving, is offered a gig in his ex-wife's nightclub and he rounds up Adam-Felicia(Guy Pearce) and Bernadette (previously Ralph), who is played by Terence Stamp.
To reach their destination, the three purchase a bus and dub it "Priscilla: Queen of the Desert." The bus provides the real character of the movie despite the antics of the three outrageously dressed in drag.

"The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" is an outlandish Australian road movie that gives new meaning to the motor mouth's challenge, "Wanna drag?" In what is little more than a fashion victims' show on wheels, a trio of female impersonators pit their wiles--and sometimes their fists--against the Outback's good ol' boys.
Terence Stamp is the movie's chief asset, playing the world-weary transsexual Bernadette, who joins drag queens Mitzi (Hugo Weaving) and Felicia (Guy Pearce) on a cross-country tour of Australia aboard the lavender school bus Priscilla.
"The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" is rated R for explicit language and subject matter.
