The Affair of the diamond necklace was a mysterious incident in the 1780s at the court of Louis XVI of France involving the queen Marie Antoinette.
The Affair was historically significant as one of the events that led to the French populace's disillusionment with the monarchy, which eventually culminated in the French Revolution.
The affair of the necklace was important in discrediting the French monarchy in the years before the Revolution.

In the interview the cardinal was led to believe that the queen wished to acquire a diamond necklace of enormous value and that she had chosen him as her confidential agent.
When Rohan obtained the necklace from the jewelers, he turned it over to the comtesse; her husband took it to London, where it was broken up for sale.
The queen, noted for her extravagance and frivolity, was unjustly implicated in the affair; her enemies hinted that she had schemed to ruin the cardinal or that she had used her favor to obtain the necklace and then refused to pay.

The Affair of the diamond necklace involved a mysterious incident in the 1780s at the court of Louis XVI of France, which involved the queen Marie Antoinette.
On January 21, 1785 the Countess Lamotte announced that the queen would buy the necklace, but that not wishing to treat directly, she left the affair to a high personage.
Meanwhile the "comte de Lamotte" appears to have started at once for London, it is said with the necklace, which he broke up in order to sell the stones.

 The Affair of the Necklace
Alternately boring and hilarious, The Affair of the Necklace is high cheese of the French Revolution variety, delighted by its own creamery version of ribaldry (there are more stifled titters in Affair than at an Oscar Wilde convention) and infatuated with the passion that ripping bodices has failed to imply for over two centuries.
The Swank of The Affair of the Necklace is the Swank of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which is of course the only Swank, her stunt turn in Boys Don't Cry notwithstanding.
The most astonishing thing about The Affair of the Necklace, though, is how with a cast that includes Brian Cox, Christopher Walken, and Jonathan Pryce, it manages to be jaw-droppingly awful; had I not squirmed in mute horror, transfixed before the film's appalling majesty, I would not have believed it myself.

The royal jeweler had made the gaudy glitterfest for the mistress of King Louis XV, but upon his death she was banished from the court, and the jeweler is now about to go bankrupt, since the current queen doesn't want it.
Jeanne falsely convinces him that the queen wants the necklace, but is afraid the people will be outraged by the extravagance.
So the plan is for the cardinal to buy the necklace for the queen; she will discreetly pay him back at a later date, and he will then be named prime minister.

Both Charlotte Gray and the 18th century period piece The Affairs Of The Necklace have historic events as the backdrop (in the case of Affair Of The Necklace it is based on true events); both are well crafted in script - but entirely different when it comes to technical quality.
The Affair Of The Necklace is also an independent production that is only distributed by Warner Bros. I mention this specifically because of the technical quality in which the feature is presented on disc.
Although the revolution itself has been well documented, the affair surrounding a 2800 carat necklace that became in the eyes of the poor the symbol of Marie Antoinette's greed and indifference to their plight is virtually unknown.

That's a lot of history to fit into a 116-minute film, but director Charles Shyer does his best in The Affair of the Necklace, his classy, if not riveting, filmed adaptation of the event.
Affair starts out awkwardly, showing the king's guards murdering the rabble-rousing father of the child Jeanne (Hilary Swank) and explaining her quest to reclaim her family title through a voice-over that slides into the narrative as smoothly as a sandpaper shoehorn.

As Hilary Swank's first starring vehicle since winning the 1999 best actress Oscar, expectations are running high for "The Affair of the Necklace," and for her performance in it.
As screenwriter John Sweet tells it, Jeanne was a wronged woman on a noble mission to avenge the death of her liberal aristocrat father, who was murdered (in front of her eyes, when she was a child) by the monarchy for speaking out against injustice.
The affair of the necklace itself is so complex and many-sided that it would take a Sidney Lumet to do justice to it on film.

IGN: Affair of the Necklace, The Review
Set in 1786-era Paris, The Affair of the Necklace has been given its fair share of both soap operatic and camp tinges, both of which are meant to embellish this tale of royal scandal set during Marie Antoinette?s prima donna reign of France.
Shunned by the court, she is driven to desperate acts of deception involving forged letters from the Queen; the Cardinal of all France, Louis de Rohan (played here by Jonathan Pryce); and a lavish diamond necklace (hence the title of the film).
The main thrust of the film?s protagonist was to generate an affair that would result in the reclamation of her name during a period of history when names and appearances meant the world.

The supporting cast gave fine performances: Brian Cox was as reliable as ever as Baron de Breteuil, and Jonathan Pryce stole the show as the flamboyant Cardinal de Rohan, Prince of the Church and devout libertine.
Simon Shackleton and Joely Richardson, as the King and Queen, make the most of their brief scenes: out of touch with their world, but by no means the malevolent caricatures portrayed in the street theatricals and pamphlets we see.
But despite the quality of the acting and visual charm of the costumes and locations, 'The Affair of the Necklace' fails because of its uncertain tone and transformation of Jeanne de la Motte-Valois into a sentimental heroine.

An answer may be found in two current releases, Gosford Park and The Affair of the Necklace, a pair of lush period pieces.
Both films are set in fairly turbulent eras--The Affair of the Necklace takes place on the eve of the French Revolution and Gosford Park unfolds between the two world wars in England--and both have scenes of murder and mayhem.
As with Gosford Park, a well-crafted story is also the great strength of The Affair of the Necklace, which represents an impressive achievement on the part of the writer, John Sweet, as well as the director, Charles Shyer.
