Benvenuto Cellini was born in Florence at the peak of the Italian Renaissance.
Cellini himself was convicted of homosexual sodomy in Florence in 1523 and in 1557.
In this context, Cellini was convicted of sexual relations with a young man in 1557 and sentenced to four years in prison.

The Affairs of Cellini (aka The Firebrand), Lucille Ball Movies | Youns.com
When the Duke of Florence (Frank Morgan) falls for Cellini's beautiful model (Fay Wray), Cellini is presented in court, whereupon he revives an ongoing affair with the Duchess of Florence (Constance Bennett).
Affairs of Cellini is based on Edwin Justus Mayer's popular stage play The Firebrand, which in turn was based on the life and times of Renaissance artist/political reactionary Benvenuto Cellini.
Though hardly reliable as history, Affairs of Cellini scores on its comic content, including the hilarious performances of Frank Morgan as the cuckolded Duke and Fay Wray as the monumentally stupid artist's model.

Benvenuto Cellini, the great Italian jeweller, sculptor and engraver, was one of the most interesting men of the sixteenth century, and wrote one of the most exciting and graphic autobiographies ever written.
This was understandable, for he lived at a time when disobedience or even hasty words which offended a powerful patron might result in poverty or even death; and when the torture and death could result from disobedience of the law.
Then there is the history of Cellini’s time in Fontainelbeau and his quarrels with King Louis and his volatile mistress.

Cellini’s prior achievement (statuettes and candlesticks) was arrayed high along the left wall, tumbling on cue and with a great clatter in response to Cellini’s prayer.
The duel between Cellini and Fieramosca was not allowed to become too lurid a possibility, and the moment when Fieramosca gets put to work for his competitor was handled with comic grace.
More in the spirit of the opera, Cellini (nicely played by Fredric March in the bemused and swashbuckling manner of a Douglas Fairbanks) labours under the constant threat of public hanging for his escapades; while the regal Constance Bennett as the Duchess of Florence adds precisely the element that Berlioz forgot.

Theater News - Tunes, Tomes, & Videos: Benvenuto, Cellini! -
The opening, an 18-minute mini-opera wherein Cellini's planned execution in Florence's public square is halted by a pardon (shades of The Threepenny Opera), is expertly assembled and prodigiously rhymed: "Florence" alone is hooked with "warrants," "torrents," and "abhorrence." But, right away, something's amiss.
Cellini is pardoned, the street vendors hawking "souvenirs of the hanging of Cellini" change their spiel to "souvenirs of the pardon of Cellini," and the story lurches forward.
Cellini and Angela share a lovely waltz, "You're Far Too Near Me" (with some ingenious internal rhymes), but it sounds more sincere than this bounder of a hero deserves.

Benvenuto Cellini was a goldsmith in 16th-century Florence, and apparently he was also something of a hell-raiser and a swordsman (in the sexual sense as well as the literal one).
However, it's my understanding that we have only Cellini's own memoirs (never published in his lifetime) as testimony of his sexual prowess.

A well-made bedroom farce has the versatile March as the hellraising, womanizing rake and rascal, Benvenuto Cellini, a talented artist who would rather dabble with other men's wives than pursue his literary and artistic career.
Meanwhile, Cellini's enemies--and there are scores of them--headed by Louis Calhern, fight a number of duels and Cellini barely manages to escape death in some uninviting torture chambers.
Director La Cava, who was to direct many of the great W.C. Fields films, produced a tongue-in-cheek movie where March parodies the part to perfection, but most of his scenes with Morgan were stolen outright by the great character actor, no mean feat.
