The Afghan Whigs were an American soul-influenced alternative rock band of the 1990s.
The Afghan Whigs then signed to a major label, Elektra Records, and released another critically acclaimed album, Gentlemen that failed to break the band into the mainstream, though it spawned the minor hits "Debonair" and "Gentlemen".
The Afghan Whigs appeared in the film as a bar band and contributed the Frederick Knight cover "Be For Real" and the Barry White cover "Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe" to the soundtrack.

The Afghan Whigs were born in a jail cell in Athens, Ohio.
Afghan Whigs, named after a Florida-based white Muslim biker gang from the Sixties who were into love, not war, finally got it together a year later, with Steve Earle on drums and John Curley playing bass.
The Whigs were back in the badlands of their own making, more band disputes erupted into fist fights and Greg was eventually dispatched to hospital for urgent medical care.

 TrouserPress.com :: Afghan Whigs
Greg Dulli has done a neat job of claiming that role for himself: the frontman of Cincinnati's Afghan Whigs — and, more recently, the Twilight Singers — is possessed of an impressive swagger and one of the more (melo)dramatic voices this side of Jim Morrison.
The other Whigs do an impressive job of contriving panoramic images through judicious use of wah-wah guitar (Rick McCollum's contribution to the breathless "Turn on the Water") and the tribal drumbeats with which Steven Earle invokes an air of ritualistic surrender.
Dulli's over-the-top emoting — he goes from a whisper to a scream on track after track, most engagingly on "Debonair" and the lasciviously cocky "Be Sweet" — is matched by appropriately imperious arrangements that allow McCollum plenty of room to roam.

Summer's Kiss: The Afghan Whigs, Twilight Singers, Greg Dulli Compendium
When I say that Greg Dulli, the former leader of American alt-rock legends The Afghan Whigs, is a man of substance, it isn’t purely a weight gag (the extra pounds on his Greek-American frame notwithstanding).
In his manifestations as leader/frontman of acclaimed groups The Twilight Singers and, previously, the Afghan Whigs, he’s proven to be one of popular music’s most enduring iconoclasts.
A swashbuckling survivor, who started the Afghan Whigs in Cincinnati 20 years ago, Dulli is now on to his fourth album with the Twilight Singers and is still making some of the best music of his career.

Following the fan favorite 1996 release Black Love, the Afghan Whigs moved to Columbia and recorded what would be their final album, 1965.
Throughout their career, the Afghan Whigs played with many talented musicians, on stage and in the studio.

It took only two songs before Afghan Whigs frontman Greg Dulli launched into a little impromptu a cappella rendition of an old romantic soul classic last Sunday at the Paradise.
Like Marilyn Manson on Halloween, Springsteen on the Fourth of July, or, I dunno, the Stones on Veterans Day, the Whigs may just be the perfect band to sing the Valentine's Day blues.
Dulli used the opportunity to opine that Van Halen's 1984 was better than Bowie's, to recount watching Bobby Brown drop a packet of cocaine on stage during a Grammy performance, and to conclude that he wouldn't be getting laid that night.

Why Smashing Pumpkins are still so well regarded and Afghan Whigs are still so "underground" is such a complete mystery to me. In 20 years I won't know who Billy Corgan ever was (unless he's the governor of some state), but I'll still be listening to this great piece work.
Led by the impassioned wailing and libidinous lyrics of frontman Greg Dulli, the Whigs played a sweaty, soulful brand of rock that, regrettably, didn't quite fit in with either the dominant mainstream or alternative currents of the '90's.
In discussing the Afghan Whigs among the curious or un-informed, I often draw the parallel that their music is a lot like John Coltrane's final recordings.

Here, the funky Motown groove that Afghan Whigs have previously only toyed with on B-side cover tunes (turning the sweet innocence of Diana Ross and the Supremes into frenzied torture) becomes prominent; wah-wah pedals and organs screaming.

But the symbolist fun-with-words game actually starts making sense once one realizes that a Whig is the obsolete term for a member of the Liberal party, and Afghan is a type of hashish.
