Movie Reviews | 'The Alamo' -- Palm Beach Post
The movies have often depicted the conflict between a couple of hundred Texans yearning for independence and an army of some 2,500 Mexican soldiers in white hat-fl hat terms.
The most recent example was in 1960, in one of the few cinematic skirmishes that John Wayne did not win.
Students of studio economics will recall that this is not the movie originally on the drawing boards, the one slated to be directed by Ron Howard and starring Russell Crowe as Sam Houston.

 Alamo, The (2004): Reviews
The real struggle in The Alamo is between historic revisionism and Hollywood notions of sacrifice, and it's not much of a contest: Hollywood wins, as it did in John Wayne's sprawling, factually spurious 1960 film.
The good news first: The Alamo is probably the most historically accurate depiction yet to reach the screen of the famous siege.
The middle of the movie is pokey and unfocused--and, given the circumstances, bizarrely lacking in urgency.

EI > Columns > ‘Remember the Alamo!’- John Wayne's 'The Alamo'
John Ford described THE ALAMO as ‘the greatest picture I’ve ever seen.’ George Stevens said ‘there are images in THE ALAMO that will haunt you and inspire you for a lifetime… it is a modern classic.’ I think it is safe to say that these two giants knew what they were talking about.
As the lyrics of the haunting ALAMO music say at the end of the John Wayne film ‘they fought to give us freedom/That is all we need to know.’ If that is all we need to know then the essence, or spirit of the story is what is necessary in a film, not historical accuracy.
We must remember that John Wayne was the biggest movie star in the world, both from a box office point of view and from the perspective of career longevity.

 Laramie Movie Scope: The Alamo
The 2004 version of “The Alamo” stars Billy Bob Thornton of “Bad Santa” as Davy Crockett, one of the legendary characters who died at the Alamo, along with James Bowie (played by Jason Patric of “Narc”), inventor of the famous Bowie knife.
He waxes eloquently on the motivations of men in battle, and he hints that the main reason he decided to make his last stand at the Alamo was because he felt the need to live up to his own inflated reputation, which by then had already been enhanced in popular stage plays and tall tales.
The movie rates a C. By the way, I saw this film at the Star Cinema in Stayton, Oregon, where I used to watch movies as a kid.

The Alamo Movie Review at Hollywood Video
It is a seductive picture that Houston paints of riches to be made and a new land to tame, so much so that it attracts the attention of Kentucky statesman and legendary frontiersman Davy Crockett (a bewigged Billy Bob Thornton).
A year later when the vastly outnumbered Texians, as they call themselves, make a last stand at the Alamo against Mexican general Santa Anna's army, Crockett is among those leading the doomed defense, along with Houston's consumptive drinking buddy Jim Bowie (Jason Patric), and foppish Colonel William Barrett Travis (Broadway star Patrick Wilson).
1960 (Not Rated) Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie bravely defend the Alamo in 1836 against a Mexican army that greatly outnumbers the defenders.

This new version of the Alamo attempts to show Santa Ana and the defenders of the Alamo as they really were.
The defenders of the Alamo not only are not developed as characters, but they are not depicted very sympathetically.
As a movie it is an interpretive piece but I think captures a situation where men who represented all complexities of life faced a situation that required they stand above self interest.

Effectively, El Alamo was perhaps an epical battle, but I suspect these was a wrong point into the global decision of the government of Washington to do an expansion more -and I'm afraid- less legal into territories that were no doubt property of Mexico, and before, of Spain.
Well this is one of those movies that will not let the facts stand in the way of a good story, a colorful story, one that you can still root for the good guys and maybe feel a little sad if they happen to lose.
You may see a strange parallel between the Alamo scenario where a hand full of people (knowing they were doomed) hold on as long as they can to slow down the pace if the Mexican army.

The Alamo (2004 film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Alamo is a 2004 movie, a second major studio film about the legendary Battle of the Alamo during the Texas Revolution, that was shot and scheduled for release initially in December 2003 and then rescheduled for release in April 2004.
The film's art direction devoted the greatest care to historical accuracy and verisimilitude; for instance, the mission's facade does not feature the well-known "hump" at the top, a detail that was actually added years after the battle during a restoration.
In contrast to the earlier 1960 film, the 2003 script makes an effort to depict the political points of view of both the Mexican and Texian sides.

 Barbershop Movie Review: The Alamo
This Texas war for independence is much more realistic than the John Wayne 1960 version of The Alamo.
Great pains have been taken to recreate everything about the period, from weapons to clothing to the San Antonio Mission turned fortress, where in 1836 some 189 American and Mexican rebels were massacred by an overwhelmingly superior Mexican Army.
This movie, The Alamo, seems to be a historically accurate account of the famous attack that took place around 1836 in a former mission turned into a fortress in Texas.

Perhaps John Wayne's 1960 folklore version is the most famous.
By the early 1830's, conflict arose between the Mexican government and American residents or "Texians." As an organized rebellion developed, frontiersmen like Davy Crockett (Billy Bob Thornton) and boozy Jim Bowie (Jason Patric) took command, along with colorless Lt. Col.
They were among the nearly 200 Texians killed in 1836 defending The Alamo, an old Franciscan mission-turned-fortress, during a savage 13-day siege by sadistic Gen. Santa Anna (Emilio Echevarria) and his 1,400 Mexican soldiers.

Told principally in flashback, the story begins its slow boil with the various principals converging in and around the Alamo in early 1836.
In the revised story, one followed fairly attentively by the latest "Alamo" filmmakers, these 200 besieged include Texan immigrants, Tejanos (Texans of Mexican decent) and American volunteers who are engaging in the larger fight for independence by standing up to the well-armed Mexican president, Antonio López de Santa Anna.
Resigned to never living up to his legend, his Crockett is at once a fallible man and king of the wildly mythic frontier, and the actor perfectly fulfills the need for the character to be both empathetic and entertaining.
