The Alamo (2004 film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Alamo is a 2004 movie, a second major studio film about the legendary battle, was shot and scheduled for release initially in December 2003 and then rescheduled for release in April 2004.
Here, what is reported to be the largest outdoor film set in history was built, comprising the entire Alamo mission and the nearby town of Bexar.
The film's art direction devoted the greatest care to historical accuracy and verisimilitude; for instance, the mission's facade does not feature the well-known "hump" at the top, a detail that was actually added years after the battle during a restoration.

 The Alamo (2004) Movie Review - RopeofSilicon.com
We all have heard the story, and there is a movie here, but with this movie it manages to take all the life out of the film and turn it into such a long and boring picture.
The movie is primarily focused on the three men inside the Alamo walls, Col. William Travis (Patrick Wilson), James Bowie (Jason Patric), and David Crockett (Billy Bob Thornton).
Movies such as Braveheart have proved that violence can be used to portray emotion as much as scowls and angry talk, but in an effort to make as much money as possible so that everyone has an opportunity to snooze through this 2+ hour bore fest.

While many people know of the battle of the Alamo, few know the range of events that lead up to it and the film does a good job of setting the stage for the classic confrontation between Texas settlers and the vast Mexican forces under General Santa Ana (Emilio Echevarri’a), for control of the region.
The film attempts to fill in much of the lore, but has to speculate on many events as very little is confirmed about the battle aside from the fact that the defenders of the Alamo fought and dies valiantly against overwhelming opposition.
What is shown is that the Alamo was a former mission that is was a strategic point defending the settlements in Texas, which at that time was land that was claimed by Mexico.

The real Alamo in San Antonio, Texas, does not allow any commercial productions on the hallowed grounds, thus, the filmmakers decided to build their own set just outside Dripping Springs, Texas, a hilly area with lush green wilderness, streams, and open ground--apparently a location which was just like the actual Alamo location of 1836.

The 2004 movie from Disney's Touchstone Pictures tries to be reasonably fair in presenting the outlooks of combatants on both sides, but in doing so it rather waters down the story and makes some of it seem like a History Channel documentary.
In essence, the movie was itself a battle for the ages, and like the little band of Texas defenders, it was consumed by overwhelming odds.
And I appreciated the movie's hints that social hostilities were as demanding in 1836 as they ever have been, Bowie and Travis owning slaves who are themselves conflicted about whom to serve, and a number of Mexicans fighting alongside the Texans because they hate the despotic Santa Anna.

Overall, Remember The Alamo for what it was — the courageous last stand of a group of individuals who saw Texas as a fresh new start away from the dishonorable lives they once lived and free from the oppressive rule of a totalitarian regime.
The Alamo no doubt will have its critical, as well as public, hecklers but their criticism is reserved to the less knowledgeable area of their field that focuses only on what is on the surface and doesn’t require supplemental insight into historical events.
