Amazon.com: The Alchemist: A Fable About Following Your Dream: Books: Paulo Coelho
Whilst I did not enjoy this book like I enjoyed Catch 22, or such solid hearty novel, I felt that to offer it less than five stars would be a mistake, and the undervaluing of an important and influential book.
This is a special book that makes an uplifting gift to someone wanting to seek their dream, but isn't sure to take that first step.
I enjoyed this book though with all of the hype, honestly was a bit underwhelmed.

Simplified, the aims of the alchemists were threefold: to find the Stone of Knowledge (The Philosopher's Stone); to discover the medium of Eternal Youth and Health; and to discover the transmutation of metals.
To the medieval alchemist the different elements were the same original substance in varying degrees of purity.
The logo of the Alchemist Foundation was derived from the symbols used to represent elements in alchemy.

 The Alchemist
Paulo Coehlo's 'The Alchemist' is such a book.
It is a book - in form at least, it is a book - for Stepford wives; the cynical, cosy stuff of those sad little volumes featuring chicken soup flogged at bookshop tills, and bearing the trite sentiments of down-market Christmas crackers.
Mine claimed that 'The Alchemist' had been translated into 42 languages, one had 27, another had 43, a fourth 56.

Meanwhile a strange craze like The Alchemist happens...and a hundred years from now it will probably be studied by some student as a time in the world when such a book would hold great meaning for a group of people.

 COGNITIVE-BEHAVIOURAL THERAPY IN P. COELHO'S "THE ALCHEMIST"
One of the reasons for its popularity is the strong therapeutic influence, presenting and suggesting cognitive sets, which help to reduce the distress of everyday life.
In this book the therapeutic approaches are related in an eclectic manner, but the cognitive-behavioural principle is predominant.
The present authorities (the Alchemist, the King of Salim) propose and suggest useful cognitive sets, but the latter are confirmed as a personal creed through conditioning in practice.
