The championship’s prime mover was James D. Standish Jr., of Detroit, who convinced his colleagues on the 1922 USGA Executive Committee that the time was right for such a grass-roots competition.
Harding wanted to enter the championship himself, but time didn’t permit, and besides, he was a member of at least one private club, which would preclude his entry.
That those earliest championships drew upward of 18 teams representing cities from coast to coast, was a tribute to the spread of public-course golf in America.

Steeples match, the new Amateur Championship trophy was exhibited for the first time at a luncheon given in honour of the four contestants at Frascati's Restaurant, Oxford Street, and it brought forth unqualified admiration.

 Senior Amateur Championship of Victoria - Conditions
Eligible players are male amateurs who have reached their 55th birthday by the 30th October, 2006 and whose Australian Handicap at the time of entry does not exceed 18 strokes in accordance with the Australian Handicapping System.
In the event of a tie for the Victorian Senior Amateur Championship, unless the Championship Committee otherwise determines, play shall continue over such holes as the Championship Committee shall decide, players being eliminated hole by hole as they fail to maintain equality with other or others until the winner is determined.

The British Golf Museum is celebrating the Anniversary of the 1st Amateur Championship in 1885 by opening its doors to the public for FREE on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd April.
It was such a success that it was agreed to hold a full national Amateur Championship on an annual basis starting in 1886.
In 1922, The Royal and Ancient Golf Club recognised that the 1885 tournament “was in everything but name a Championship Competition” and the 1885 winner, Allan F Macfie, was given his rightful place as the first winner of this great championship.

That’s because Thompson won the championship for the fourth consecutive year when she beat Barbara Berkmeyer, 58, of St. Louis, 3 and 1, amid pouring rain Thursday at the 41st USGA Senior Women’s Amateur, held at the par-72, 5,873-yard Mid-Pines Inn and Golf Club.
It was the sixth USGA title for Semple Thompson, who also won the 1973 U.S. Women’s Amateur and the 1990 and 1997 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur.   The sixth title ties her with Hollis Stacy and Glenna Collett Vare.  She now stands three behind all-time record holder Bobby Jones, who holds nine championships.
The event moved to match play in 1997 and became the last of the 10 national amateur championships to adopt a match-play format.  Sectional qualifying was first conducted for the 2000 championship.
