The American Analog Set - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The American Analog Set or The AmAnSet is an Austin, Texas based United States indie-post-rock pop band.
The group is led by singer and guitarist Andrew Kenny.
Their name derives from their preference for analog rather than digital recording media.

American Analog Set - New Equation 7" (Tiger Style)
Considering the band's recent singles compilation, Through the 90s, one would expect this new American Analog Set 7" to be worthwhile, as all their previous singles have had great songs and great packaging.
As a result, the 7"'s cover is an uninspired copy of the album cover, and the vinyl is of such low quality that some of the kids have started to call it a "flexi." Although both songs on the disc are otherwise unreleased, the music (the little of it there is) isn't so hot either.
Maybe American Analog Set stuck all their remaining decent songs on the singles compilation.

Set Free, The American Analog Set goes nowhere - The Daily Utah Chronicle - A & E
The members of The American Analog Set prefer recording their albums in the comfort of their own living room.
There, they recorded Set Free, a remarkably calm album considering that the band just lost their record label-something that would cause any other 10-year-old band to panic or turn to narcotics.
On this album, The American Analog Set proves that they've perfected their terrific, signature sound-only, they proved that two albums ago.

The principle behind music like American Analog Set is this: begin with one thing, change it just a little bit four measures later, change something else four measures later, and in several minutes you’ve got an entirely different song going on.
This is one of American Analog Set’s best releases to date, but don’t expect to be immediately overwhelmed by how wonderful it is. That’s not American Analog Set's way.

Since forming in Texas in 1995, the American Analog Set have come close to releasing an album a year, while building up a faithful fan base that reaches far beyond the borders of their home state.
If the EP—which features two new American Analog Set songs, one of which is a Her Space Holiday cover, and four remixes—isn't exactly cohesive, it's certainly diverse.
Although a stark contrast to the four click-hopped and glitched-out remixes, the two songs performed by the American Analog Set provide a frame of reference, making the EP accessible to listeners who may be less familiar with the group—something most remixes fail to do.

The American Analog Set's latest full-length, Set Free, should provide the score to some pretty quintessential autumn moments this year: the donning of new sweaters, the anticipation of kisses on the quad, first leaves falling, nostalgia for the summer's laughter and sunlight.
Set Free, like all AAS records, realizes what the sounds of rock instruments whispering are, favoring repetitive, hypnotic instrumental passages and words sung so quietly you can hear the breath rubbing against Kenny's lungs before it exits his mouth.
The sparse accents of the brush-hit drums, low-register organs, and slow-blooming guitars set an intimate, moody tone.

The annual South by Southwest Music Conference took place last week (March 15-19) in Austin, Texas and I had the pleasure of attending a very unique concert at Emo's in the Austin Downtown district by a really slow and quiet band called 'The American Analog Set'.
Band members Andrew Kenny and Lee Gillespie talked with me Dey Martin of 'Pop Up Radio' outside the convention hall while street musicians were playing quietly in the background.

Nothing about their songs feels indulgent, as so often seems to be the case with groups working the slow and quiet indie pop tip, and that proves very refreshing.
The American Analog Set keeps the tempos moderate and steady, skating lightly across the surface of your consciousness with a winning mixture of soft, carefully considered vocals, warm dreamy guitars, a languid rhythm section, and occasional gentle ripples of organ.
Since forming from the ashes of a group called Electric Company back in 1994, the American Analog Set has been recording records at a fairly steady rate, issuing three on Emperor Jones Records before moving on to Tiger Style, which put out their beautifully low-key album Know By Heart in 2001.

That same Farfisa organ, held happily at one note in previous settings, now sounds restless and strained on the four-part "New Drifters," buzzing behind like a swarm of bees or Manzarek droning behind Morrison on "Waiting For The Sun." Ultimately, it’s that California jazz that defines Golden Band.

The crowd was mellow, gently bobbing heads in time with the mid-tempo tunes, but seemed to appreciate what it was seeing, which was largely instrumental soundscapes spattered with repeated and overly emotional lines like “I will be there for you, she said” and “You have ruined everything” that occasionally came off as a bit whiny.
The beautiful “In Ruins” was a definite highlight, setting a somber tone that would soon be smacked upside the head.

Fortunately, Texan new wave rockers the American Analog Set are wise to this: the sleeve to Know by Heart--featuring two guitar leads, loosely coiled into a heart shape--smartly points out that there's a very human warmth in the depths of this circuitry.
As it happens, for the most part, Know by Heart is a pretty relaxed take on rock experimentalism: AAF seem intrigued by the prospect of crafting pretty nuggets of tune out of the most atypical building blocks--drone, repetition, feedback, and a studied and a largely successful restraint.
The American Analog Set succeed because they put the songs--and a whole lotta love--right at the center of their design.

As Set Free demonstrates, the band has grown musically while retaining the core identity their fans love -- wry, smart lyrics and mellow rhythms.

It remains to be seen whether this is the record for which American Analog Set's fans have been waiting a decade, but Set Free is definitely one of the most consistent, mature albums they've made to date.
