The Andantes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Andantes were a prolific female session singing group for the Motown record label during the 1960s.
The Andantes were most prominently used on all of the Four Tops' Holland-Dozier-Holland-produced hits, including "Baby I Need Your Loving", "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)", "Reach Out I'll Be There", and more.
In addition, the Andantes were used as substitutes for Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong on many of the Diana Ross and the Supremes recordings done in 1968 and 1969.

classical music - andante - charles rosen on andante
When his sister mentioned an Adagio in one of his concertos, he corrected her firmly, remarking that all of his recent concertos had andantes, not adagios (for a while in the middle of the eighteenth century, adagio meant not only "slow," but was an invitation to the performer to add many ornaments).
In my experience, it is one of the most difficult tempos to set; even in the nineteenth century it implies that the listener should not feel the tempo was either fast or slow, but nevertheless with a pace that does not have the bland and dawdling impression of a moderato.
Andante is basically a tempo today which signifies a free movement, continuously progressive, unconstrained and unforced.

The Andantes - Biography - AOL Music
When the Supremes ignited, the Andantes became the number-one studio rats.
They were in Chi-town when Mickey Stevenson needed girls to back Marvin Gaye on "Stubborn Kinda Fellow." Martha Reeves, Stevenson's secretary, called the group, who added magic to Gaye's first hit, and soon broke out on their own.
Holland-Dozier-Holland used the Andantes to smooth the Marvelettes' infectious but shaky harmony; they also used them on the Four Tops for high end, a technique Thom Bell employed with the Spinners and others in the '70s.

In at least one case, Andante applies to a motet-style fugal passage in minims (the last ten bars of BWV 12/2) that continues the style and texture of the preceding music.
But it is by no means clear that Andante does not indicate tempo here; and in any case, the use of Italian tempo words in other countries, particularly Italy, may not be relevant to the conventional use of these words in northeast Germany.
Here again we have a duet in common time; the Andante marking may be considered cautionary, warning musicians not to play it as quickly as a movement in common time would normally go.

It sold locally and Johnnie Mae worked a distribution deal with Warwick Records out of New York, and brought them a car with their name on the doors.

Tempos are always judiciously chosen: the minuets don't drag, the andantes flow, and if the allegros aren't as swift as in some modern performances, razor-sharp articulation provides the necessary energy and muscularity more effectively than sheer speed.
However, Beinum's pacing and phrasing of the "Surprise" symphony's tricky andante alone is worth the price of the disc.
There's no need to go further into the finer details of the performances, which are remarkably consistent in their approach.

These two concertos have distinct Largo and Adagio second movements, different from the Andantes of Mozart's concertos.

Holland-Dozier-Holland wrote most of Levi Stubbs' vocals in a tenor range, near the top of his range, in order to get a sense of urgency in his gospel preacher-inspired leads.
In addition, H-D-H used additional background vocals from female background vocalists The Andantes on many of these songs, to add a high end to the low-voiced harmony of The Tops, with "Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever" being one of the few exceptions.
August 1966 brought the release of the Four Tops' biggest hit, and one of the most popular Motown songs ever: "Reach Out I'll Be There", which hit #1 on the U.S. pop charts and soon became The Tops' signature song.
