Topic: The Angry Pacifist

John Kinsella: poet, novelist, critic, and journal editor
Although not a pacifist, Kant regarded war as the greatest evil besetting human societies, and in one passage he goes so far as to describe war as the source of all evils and of all moral corruption.
As a pacifist, I do believe that war is a "wrong", but I also agree that it's part of a "natural egoism": that is, that there's an inevitability in the human condition that leads to disagreement and conflict.
For me, from the absolute pacifist perspective, the suffering of the guilty is, within the terms of the language of "justice", as unjust as the suffering of the innocent.

If you feel too angry to think, engage in vigorous physical exercise to vent the pressure until you are calm enough to work through your anger.
One woman felt both anger and love for her deceased husband: "I love him but WHY did he die when he knew we had a family to rear?" By identifying and expressing her anger as well as her love, this woman was taking steps to resolve her anger and restore inner peace.
If she had suppressed her angry feelings, thinking they were wrong, she might have found herself loaded with deepseated guilt and depression.

It's part of a pacifist sensibility to want to say, simply and repeatedly: these innocent people died by violence; let's mourn them, and let's keep mourning them until we're ready to be done with mourning.
Being a pacifist means not acting on such emotions, but it doesn't mean not feeling them.
Being a pacifist, of my sort at any rate, means being against reducing any individuals to numbers or categories, especially to the category of "collateral damage"; everyone who dies by violence is an individual, with a name and a face and parents and a history.

 One Hand Clapping
Adding to my previous discussions on the shortcomings of contemporary pacifism, it seems to me that pacifists today have generally set up false dichotomies - that the choices we can make are between violence and non-violence, or between peace and war, and that in so choosing we are really choosing between sin and sinlessness.
That is, Christian pacifists seem to propose that using military force is sinful, while refraining therefrom is sinless.
Pacifists seem either unable to comprehend that fact or say it doesn't matter.

I recall it being mostly white males who call me "too angry." The women who call me "too angry" are usually women who are white, middle class, and very tied into the patriarchy as their support system.
I think it is because using the "too" in front of the "angry" has an inherent judgment to it, and that the label "too angry" is used more often to control women, than as constructive behavioral criticism.
M.L.King, jr., who many view as too pacifist, was called "too angry" as a way to try to neutralize his influence within the status quo.

 Interview With A Pacifist
H: I think I’m looking for a way to say that I’m an “activist pacifist,” that is, someone who isn’t just opposed to war, but who is actively working towards a future where all human societies see state-sanctioned violence as a remnant of their “uncivilized” past – the way human sacrifice is viewed today.
One of my favorite pacifists, Howard Zinn (who, by the way, had been an enthusiastic WWII bombardier before he thought deeply about what he had been doing), said this: If it had been suggested that we sacrifice 100 American children to end the war sooner, no American would have agreed.
The people were angry and ready to abandon their nonviolent tactics – because the racist police don’t know any other language than brute force – but Dr. King urged them to keep strong in the spirit of nonviolence and love.

But the principle here is clear: we should be angry at sin, not at people.
The sun had gone down, it was two in the morning, and she was still hopping mad — at least as hopping mad as a good Quaker in the 19th century can ever be.

 A Pacifist Primer (Nonviolence.org)
Many believe that pacifists avoid conflict due to some utopian hope that conflicts can be resolved without courage, sacrifice, or direct engagement with the adversary.
Pacifists push the limits by suggesting that these intentions and methods are suitable - even necessary - for high-risk conflicts.
As pacifists, we always risk some degree of failure: our skills might be inadequate to the task; our adversaries might not be moved; we might suffer emotional distress, loss of property, physical injury, or death.

This may be perfectly true, but so what?  All the critics have shown is that pacifist activists will sometimes meet with failure.
I believe that this argument leaves something out: the corrupting effects of violence.  Even before I had adopted my current stance, I decided I would never carry a gun on me.  I have lived in some fairly sketchy neighborhoods in my day, but nonetheless decided that it would be safer for me to remain unarmed.
But doesn’t this philosophy lack integrity?  After all, the only reason pacifists currently avoid domination is their protection from others who are willing to use violence.  Without police and armies, the argument goes, pacifists living in prosperous regions would soon realize the weakness of their approach.
