The main contributor to the strike of 1902 was the anthracite coal strike of 1900 that occurred in the same region (Williams 1904).
The main bargaining point for the coal miners was for an increase in wages because wages in the anthracite fields had been stagnant for over a year and a half.
Because of the coal operators' refusal to bargain, John Mitchell called a strike of the anthracite miners in September of 1900.

In a general way it may be said that the strike was precipitated by the leaders of the mine workers' union because they saw a chance in the face of a rising market and an enormous demand for coal to win the battle, and, if successful, greatly to strengthen their union.

The Coal Strike of 1902 was a strike by the United Mine Workers of America in the anthracite coal fields of eastern Pennsylvania.
The strike threatened to shut down the winter fuel supply to all major cities (homes and apartments were heated with anthracite or "hard" coal because it had higher heat value and less smoke than "soft" or bituminous coal.).
This strike was successfully mediated through the intervention of the federal government, which strove to provide a "Square Deal"—which Roosevelt took as the motto for his administration—to both sides.

Anthracite Coal was already discovered in parts of Wyoming County (which at that time was a part of the large Northampton County.) To get a better idea of when and where the first coal mines were, I will try to give a break down through the years about the finding and use of coal.

The Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron Co. was organized in order to ensure its parent company, the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad, a dominant position in the transportation of anthracite coal from the Schuylkill fields of eastern Pennsylvania.
However, since it was illegal for railroads to directly own coal fields or operate mines in Pennsylvania, the company had to organize a separate company for the purpose.
Originally, the company did not intend to mine coal itself; rather, it would rent the collieries it had acquired to independent operators, with the stipulation that the end product must be shipped over the Philadelphia and Reading railroad's lines.
