The Anti-Nowhere League - Biography - AOL Music
There is an old expression about a blind pig finding a chestnut now and again, and that certainly rings true when addressing the overnight phenomenon known as the Anti-Nowhere League.
Fronted by a codpiece-wearing goon of a lead singer with questionable personal hygiene who went by the name Animal, the League somehow managed to release one vulgar, loud, stupid, funny, thoroughly great EP, but hung around like a bunch of talentless louts who never got the message to clear off.

The Anti-Nowhere League is a UK Punk band formed in 1980, by lead singer Animal (real name Nick Kulmer) and rhythm guitarist Magoo (real name Chris Exall), with Bones on Drums and Baggy Elvy on Bass.
Their first gig was at Tunbridge Wells, on the day of the annual carnival, at which they promptly got arrested.
November 1981 saw the release of their first single, a cover version of Ralph McTell's 'Streets of London', with the song that was to become the groups anthem, 'So What' on the B side.

Long Live the League is a compilation, containing outtakes and remixes.
Four years on, the League evidently decided to try a new approach — or ten.
Kicking off with the classic "For You," the League's characteristic humor, insouciance and gusto are in full effect, particularly on a version of Eddie Cochran's "Something Else" copied from the Sex Pistols' version, "We Are the League" and "Streets of London." A worthy finale, bidding adieu with a loud belch rather than a whimper.

The Anti-Nowhere League came along in 1980 as the bastard sons of punk, and we were a bunch of motorbike-riding hooligans.
People were frightened by what the League were – we were the first kind of yob band: a tattooed, non-respectful, motorcycle-riding yob band, and that was something nobody wanted to know.
The punks accepted the League because we were on the second wave coming in and we were doing something a bit different.

Seriously though, with the Anti Nowhere League, there is no need for the usual journalistic frills that force a routine dialogue to sound entertaining.
The League (and they'll be rolling round on the floor at this) really are interesting people with something to say (although you may not agree with all of it).
That's why we put the band together, to be anti nowhere, the name means what it says.

Musically, there's nothing here to surprise or challenge anybody -- already dated three-chord thrash, smash, and bash at the time of its release, years later it just sounds like the type of stuff folks like Offspring listened to while killing time in rehearsal studios.
Every so often the band tries something just a tiny bit different (the slow opening to "Woman," which is almost a late-'50s tearjerker in modern leather gear before everything revs up), but mostly they just do what they do.
It's vocalist Animal, though, who transforms the League from being just another band to becoming veritable kings of trash.

This did give ANL much publicity and helped them to get some minor hits.
ANL did make comeback in 1984 under name The League the line-up was now: Nick "Animal" Karmer (vocals), Winston Blake (bass), Chris "Mango" Exall (guitar) and Mark "Gilly" Gilham (guitars).

The band's initial line-up comprised vocalist Nick Karmer (stage name 'Animal'), guitarist Chris Exall ('Magoo'), Winston Blake on bass and drummer P.J. The group actually had their 'Streets Of London' seized by the Police as the lyrical content of it's B side 'So What' became known.
By the mid 80's, after the failure of the live follow up 'Live In Yugoslavia' with second guitarist Gilly, the band shifted from Punk to a more Metal image and retitled THE LEAGUE with new drummer Michael Bettell.
Although the band toured heavily, including support slots to BIG COUNTRY, it did little to revive their fortunes.

 Rough Guides Music: ANTI-NOWHERE LEAGUE
In good punk tradition, the Anti-Nowhere League formed out of boredom.
In a time when any self-respecting punk band had to be called ‘Anti-something’, they became the Anti-Nowhere League – a ‘Nowhere’ being defined as someone happy to live a drab, nine-to-five existence.
Their first gig saw them playing uninvited during a local fair on a Tunbridge Wells common (Tunbridge Wells, for those happily ignorant, is a very genteel town in the south of England), where, if nothing else, they proved they could get arrested by.

Not really live, given that it was almost certainly recorded 'live in the studio' as the crowd noise has obviously been dubbed on later.
Animal was recorded early on in the League's career and has a lot of shouting, wobbly guitar playing and dodgy lyrics..."I'm a child molester...I molest children".
The liner notes also say "unreleased demo tracks", which would seem to fit with the music - it sounds basic, the vocals are barely audible and the (horribly basic) guitar stamps all over the songs, which seems to me to mean the tracks weren't originally meant for release.
