Instead, the Apples have taken the Boys' sound to its logical conclusion, mixing in hefty doses of The Beatles' intelligence, Monkees (circa "Stepping Stone") sass, Matthew Sweet's bittersweet fuzz and a full-on injection of punk propulsion.
Apples in Stereo emerged out of the Denver music scene as part of the Elephant 6 collective (see sidebar), though it took a few years for the current lineup of Sidney, Schneider, bassist Eric Allen and rhythm guitarist John Hill to solidify.

The Apples in Stereo always fill their 1960s-influenced pop-rock songs with extra verve and power when they play live.
This is the quickest Apples in Stereo album yet, both in terms of speed and length; it clocks in at just over 28 minutes.
That is in essence what the Apples in Stereo are about: drawing on the music of the past but using it to create their own lively, shining music now.

Apples In Stereo released a few split 7-inches, including one with fellow 60s-psychedelicists Olivia Tremor Control, on various indie labels before recording their debut album, Fun Trick Noisemaker on spinART in 1995.
Yet almost in spite of themselves, Apples in Stereo do create their own kind of soul music.
The Apples pinch tunes from everyone from The Byrds to The Boo Radleys, never questioning the righteousness of their cause.

Apples singer/guitarist Robert Schneider likens the operation to a "club" or an "extended musical family," which is apt in the sense that the bands affiliated with Elephant 6 are all signed to different labels.
And the Apples in Stereo, whose latest disc is the brand new singles retrospective Science Fair (their own Anthology of sorts), have a deal with spinART.
On Science Fair you can hear the Apples in Stereo coalescing as a band, learning to make sophisticated music using low-tech equipment, forging a sound of their own from stray bits and pieces of '60s pop.

Robert Schneider, the de facto leader of Apples in Stereo, the flagship of the Elephant 6 indie-pop collective, has always specialized in writing 1960s-inspired psychedelic pop tarts frosted with catchy melodies and then recording them on home analog taping equipment.
This harder edge notwithstanding, the Apples haven’t eschewed their retro trademarks.
Velocity of Sound is a natural progression for the band rather than a drastic step forward, but the more expansive sound should help them shake their lo-fi tag.

The Apples are the brainchild of Robert Schneider, a four-track whiz kid with a line in homebrew pop that draws on the Beatles, Kinks, Byrds and most prominently, "Pet Sounds"/"Smile"-era Beach Boys.
While the Olivias' "Dusk at Cubist Castle" was the most ambitious effort, the Apples' "Fun Trick Noisemaker" was clearly the best, an audacious blast of sunshine pop filtered through a swirling, off-kilter sonic sensibility and the charming limitations of eight-track recording.
With "Tone Soul Evolution," the Apples' sophomore slab, Schneider returns with higher fidelity and sharper focus, tightening and often improving on the somewhat diffuse brilliance of his debut.

The Apples in Stereo, who restlessly continue to evolve with their recently released CD The Discovery of a World Inside The Moone, are also the band with the biggest, nicest smiles.
The Apples began their part of the show's festivities at the scheduled time of 9:30 PM, charging through nearly an hour's worth of music, from "Look Away" (their great new single) to old classics like "I Can't Believe", "Shine a Light" and "Strawberry Fire".
Following the Apples' performance there was about a 20-minute break, and the already-dense crowd grew thicker, leaving little room to get to the bar.

Apples in Stereo's leader, Robert Schneider, never seems to run out of ways to describe the world as a psychedelic place.
A childlike enthusiasm infuses tunes such as "The Rainbow" and "Look Away," in which a healthy dollop of Beatlesesque hooks, bright guitars, circus horns, and pop harmonies circa 1966-67 are a sharp contrast from the modern world of endless trip-hop drum loops and synthetic soul.

Robert Schneider, chief architect of the Apples in stereo, has a way of answering a question that suggests he's been keeping himself vigilant on the road with double espressos every 15 minutes.
With the furiously raved-up adrenalinized rock of the Apples's latest album, The Velocity of Sound, the band has taken a giant leap toward matching Schneider's rapid-fire touring persona, which is the very thing that has stoked the band in the live setting from the beginning.
Over the course of six years and an exquisite catalog of albums, singles and EPs, the Apples have remained resolute in their pursuit of the twittering pop machine, adding sheets of gilt-edged intricacy to a beautiful foundation of classically influenced indie pop.

Worried about potential lawsuits from other bands with the same name, the group became the Apples in Stereo for their first album, Fun Trick Noisemaker, a nifty little record that shows they didn't use up all the best tunes on the EP.

It used to be that the Apples in Stereo were the most reliable, level-headed members of the Elephant 6 collective.
Okay, so the concept part of Her Wallpaper Reverie isn't that obtrusive by itself, but it does give the Apples license to indulge in dinky, somewhat annoying "mood pieces", most of which include a shrill harpsichord-like "theme".
The first is an excellent example of the kind of drowsy, shuffling Beatlesque psych-pop we're used to hearing from the Apples; the second is an irresistibly head-bobbing Beach Boys tribute; the third is a similarly cheery, upbeat tune written and sung by drummer Hilarie Sidney.

 The Apples in Stereo
Of the triumvirate of bands at the center of the psych-pop Elephant Six musical collective, The Apples in Stereo are perhaps the sweetest, goofiest, and most accessible.
Less relentlessly experimental than the The Olivia Tremor Control and less alarmingly psychological than Neutral Milk Hotel, The Apples take the Anglo pop music of the '60s that provides inspiration for all the members of the E6 coterie and just have a good time with it.
The Beach Boys are the most obvious antecedent to the music made by Robert Schneider and his wacky team of nostalgists, though the The Beatles, Kinks, and The Zombies are also huge influences.
