The Art of Fugue - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Art of Fugue or The Art of the Fugue (Die Kunst der Fuge), BWV 1080, is an unfinished work by Johann Sebastian Bach composed in 1748-1749 and published after his death in 1750.
The piece is written in parts score without instrument designation, although all of it fits the range of commonly available keyboard instruments of Bach's time, and is playable by a keyboard soloist; Bach possibly intended it to be playable on a range of instruments, and on a variety of instrumental combinations.
In 2004, Kenneth Amis arranged the fugues and canons for wind ensemble.

The Art of Fugue for band
Today, most scholars agree that The Art of Fugue is a harpsichord work consisting of fourteen fugues and four canons all in the same key (originally D minor) and all utilizing the same motto theme.
Nevertheless, the Art of Fugue took the idea of contrapuntal design to a new level and represents the work of a seasoned composer at the height of his artistic and intellectual genius.
Whether a movement from The Art of Fugue is performed alone or is made part of a larger programmatic design, after the performance, a listener should be thoroughly convinced of the absurdity of the antiquated notion that this work was only meant to be heard in one’s mind and not performed.

Whereas the Art of Fugue manifests its greatness in thematic transformation and fugue, the Musical Offering and Vom himmel hoch demonstrate the rigors of canon, while the Goldberg develops a variety of keyboard styles unified by two-part form and bass line.
The Art of Fugue stands as counterpart to Bach's earlier Well Tempered Clavier whose double cycle of preludes and fugues in each of twelve Major, and minor, keys represents tonal miniatures wherein the primary relationships are procedural, not thematic.
Recent handwriting analysis, and study of watermarks in the autograph, suggest that the Art of Fugue was composed in the early 1740's.

The Art of Fugue starts slowly but its ingenuity comes in many forms, from the individual writing to the combination of parts which have to be brought out against the background of the others.
In 1774, Kirnberger wrote "the Art of Fugue is more difficult in the entire science of compositions than this, each of the four voices have not only its own fluent melody, but all of them have a uniform character which is maintained so that in their union, a single perfect whole is created".
There are many new areas of the fugue which when played on a single instrument could be lost and this is where four different instruments (or 17 as the case may be) make the Art much more clearer.

There are many apocryphal stories in the classical-music world, but the one in which Frederick the Great challenged Bach to improvise a six-part fugue on a theme of the king's own invention is true, and The Musical Offering was, after a period of further reflection, the result.
As with all the works of Bach's later years, the work is both great art and a "teaching piece," which shows everything that he thought could be done with the king's theme.
