Inspired by the key moment in the play when the school teacher realises his colleagues have suddenly all bought new yellow shoes despite not having any money at all, the villagers' costumes gradually evolve in blocks of bright colours, from the footwear upwards as the scenes progress.

In the final scene, the entire village are dressed in garish colours, as they prepare to all murder the despairing school teacher whose white clothes encompass the ideals of simplicity and moral goodness from the start of the play.

In reports in the Daily Telegraph and on the BBC, critic and NDA organiser Jeffery Taylor sparked debate by pointing the finger at a culture of political correctness in the classroom, and specifically at the outlawing of touch, preventing teachers from physically "manipulating" the dancer into correct positions.
A recent Times Educational Supplement feature highlighted that 70 to 90% of all communication is non-verbal but while academic debate on visual communication is lively, little is understood about touch.
In a culture of concern about inappropriate contact with children, touch is often construed as sexual or aggressive and school teachers are constrained by fear of accusation.
