The DVD Journal | Quick Reviews: The Asphalt Jungle
Adapted from the popular novel by W.R. Burnett (one of Huston's favorite writers), The Asphalt Jungle's dense, multi-character plot concerns a small gang of criminals in a large midwestern American city who hope to loot $1 million in diamonds from a local jeweler.
Taken merely by its plot, there is nothing to distinguish The Asphalt Jungle from virtually all other heist films, with its easily recognized three-part structure (preparation, job, downfall) and criminals who perform specialized tasks within a larger team framework.
Warner's DVD release of The Asphalt Jungle offers a solid full-frame transfer (1.33:1) from a fl-and-white source-print that would benefit from a restoration, but is still pleasant to watch with some collateral wear and one frame-dropout.

BBC - Movies - review - The Asphalt Jungle   (Site not responding. Last check: )
This tale of a jewel theft gone wrong is notable for its gritty procedural detail and an emphasis on the inner lives of the small time crooks, expertly played by Sterling Hayden and Sam Jaffe.
The key to all their aspirations is a bag of gems which, much like the eponymous statue in Huston's The Maltese Falcon, prove to be unusable.
Shot with an eye for the grimy beauty of the underworld and utterly merciless to its characters, The Asphalt Jungle is a biting, bitter espresso of a movie.

The Asphalt Jungle was based on a novel by the prolific W.R. Burnett, who also wrote Little Caesar and Saint Johnson (the fictionalized life story of Wyatt Earp).

Rather than keep using the city landfill to dump thousands of asphalt roofing shingles, many damaged by recent hail storms, Brown wants to grind up the shingles and use them to pave asphalt roads.
Paving companies have started thinking about using shingles in their asphalt as the skyrocketing cost of oil has increased asphalt prices.
Roger Brown said using shingles in asphalt has been a cost-saver for his company, and he predicted that as the practice becomes widespread, state and local governments could share in the savings.

 Amazon.com: Asphalt Jungle: Video: Sterling Hayden,Louis Calhern,Jean Hagen,James Whitmore,Sam Jaffe,John McIntire,Marc ...
The dark urban world of The Asphalt Jungle is one of the essential destinations in film noir, but be warned: despite tough guy Sterling Hayden's dreams of bucolic escape, there is no way out.
So the plan is immediately two-tiered--one level is composed of the men who actually take the risks (and get the smaller share of the loot), and the second level is composed of the men with the money and the connections.
Actually, I'll give "The Asphalt Jungle" four and a half stars, as it stands as one of the great "films noir", and another triumph for director, John Huston.

The Asphalt Jungle : filmcritic.com Movie Review
Jungle is one of Hayden's finest hours, earnest and searing as he finds himself wrapped up in the perfect crime -- a jewel heist which is (unfortunately) a rather simple safecracking affair.
This time out, Hayden's desperate gambling addict looks about ready to do anything in order to get back to the pastoral farm where he grew up -- and we believe it.
But the fun of Jungle comes after the thieving, when the cops are after the half dozen collaborators, and each one of them starts to show cracks in his armor.

Each man has a weakness, but none have a pathology, which marks The Asphalt Jungle as quite different from the gangster films of the time, where greed and nihilism presage the future we understand today.
