Richard Nixon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Richard Nixon was born in Yorba Linda, California to Francis Nixon and Hannah Milhouse Nixon in a house his father built from a kit purchased from Sears, Roebuck.
Nixon promised "peace with honor," and without claiming to be able to win the war, Nixon claimed that "new leadership will end the war and win the peace in the Pacific".
Nixon's sense of being persecuted by his "enemies," his grandiose belief in his own moral and political excellence, and his commitment to utilize ruthless power at all costs led some experts to describe him as having a narcissistic and paranoid personality.

There are obvious parallels between Bick’s assassination attempt and the attacks on 9-11, and Bick’s disgust at America’s involvement in an unwinable war on the other side of the world has a clear comparison to the war in Iraq.
Taxi Driver for example worked because the assassination plot line was a smaller piece of the puzzle when it came to understanding Travis Bickle’s frustration with society and his need to save the young prostitute Iris.
In “Richard Nixon”, both title and the flashback structure indicates where we will end up by the end of the movie leaving a sense of waiting for the inevitable to happen and draining the film of any sense of ambiguousness.

Based on an obscure true story, The Assassination of Richard Nixon is about a man named Samuel Byck (here spelled Bicke) who channeled his frustration, disappointment and anger into a 1974 plot to kill the 37th president of the United States.
That Byck did not succeed is a no-brainer; Nixon lived long enough to resign from office amidst the Watergate scandal and then reinvent himself as an elder statesman before dying at 81 in 1994.
The Assassination of Richard Nixon acknowledges the fact that in a society run by contract, not everyone is going to agree to sign on.

filmcritic.com Movie Review: The Assassination of Richard Nixon
Richard Nixon does not die in The Assassination of Richard Nixon, but the film’s protagonist – a depressed, angry, middle-aged man named Samuel Bicke (Sean Penn) – eventually comes to believe that, for the good of himself and his country, the commander-in-chief deserves death.
Estranged from his wife, unable to hold down employment, and disgusted by the lies and hypocrisies of a 1974 American society that favors the deceitful rich and powerful over the little man, Bicke is a powder keg waiting for his fuse to be lit.
Written by Mueller and Kevin Kennedy (whose script was inspired by the real-life assassination attempt of Samuel Byke), The Assassination of Richard Nixon parallels to 9/11 and vocalization of common anti-Bush sentiments are – at least according to the director – purely coincidental, as the project was initially conceived years ago.

Premiere Magazine: The Assassination of Richard Nixon
The only successful assassination attempt on our 37th President was one of character, which makes it ironically appropriate that such a radically titled film would focus more on a fictionalized character study than the actual events that inspired it.
Cowritten and directed by first-time helmer Niels Muller, The Assassination of Richard Nixon sets the way-back machine for 1974, when an average shlub named Sam Byck tried to hijack a 747 and fly it into the White House, his sights set on the Watergate-keeper himself.
"Salesman" Nixon (the personification of all Bicke’s displaced anger) mirrors a certain Republican incumbent—but lefty leanings aside—the brilliant subtleties of this absorbing, must-see drama are best seen through Penn, who transforms a strongly nuanced script into the greatest performance of the year.

Apart from this trifling coincidence, The Assassination of Richard Nixon is about as far from 2003's Mystic River as you can get, although both feature the trademark plonking intensity/humourlessness Penn brought to this year's Oscars shindig.
As with 1973's The Day of the Jackal, which concerned the plot to assassinate De Gaulle, the film inevitably loses zing given the recorded facts – I'm pretty sure the much maligned 37th President left town in a Marine helicopter, not a fiery explosion.
Entertainment-wise, The Assassination of Richard Nixon is towards the back of a crowded field led by the likes of 1993's Falling Down and the original 1962 Manchurian Candidate.
