The Autumn of the Patriarch - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Autumn of the Patriarch (original Spanish title: El Otoño del Patriarca) is a novel, written by Gabriel García Márquez in 1975.
García Márquez symbolizes this with the discovery of the dictator's corpse in the battered presidential palace; the newly liberated subjects are unable to identify the body of a man whose image has marked their entire lives because they are unable to see him as a human being (hence: "Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead").
Among García Márquez's most haunting and realistic novels, The Autumn of the Patriarch gives an understanding the phenomenon of caudillismo and a perspective into the mindset of a nation living under oppression.

The patriarch takes the 12-year old “school girl,” as well as her “peers,” to the stables, talks with them and performs sexual acts with them.
This idea, combined with the fact that the girl realized that the Patriarch was “more frightened” even than herself, shows that even though she sees him as a powerful figure, she still recognizes, as does the reader through her point of view, his vulnerability and his positive qualities.
In The Autumn of the Patriarch, Marquez brings in the character of the “school girl” for definite reasons.

The first image I had of The Autumn of the Patriarch was a very old man in a very luxurious palace into which cows come and eat up the curtains." But the image is a metaphor for the two parallel tracks on which The Autumn runs.
The Autumn of the Patriarch is not a novel in the conventional sense.
The Patriarch never dies; he is alive and dead at the same time, he is both himself and not himself, evil lives on from one generation to the next.

The "Patriarch" is the ur-dictator, the tyrant personified, an old man who never steps down, who rules behind a double whose death thus gives rise to a legend of immortality.
THE AUTUMN OF THE PATRIARCH is not really a South American, magico-realist novel, though it is that.
Autumn of the Patriarch certainly isn't the best of Garcia Marquez's movels to start with (that would be One Hundred Years of Solitude, of course), but it's an important part of his oeuvre, even if it's not as 'fun.' I recommend it to literate people everywhere.

In accordance with my theory on satire in Gabriel García Márquez, it might be said that in its narrative technique The General in His Labyrinth—like The Autumn of the Patriarch—belongs to the dialogical genre, in Bakhtinian terms; that is, it is told in dialogue to arrive at the truth.
The Autumn of the Patriarch was written from this same analytical perspective—as an explanation of the phenomenon of dictatorship—except that its narrative technique is more daring and experimental.
As with the dictator in The Autumn of the Patriarch, García Márquez builds up his character’s psychology, personality, and behavior on the basis of a multitude of documents.
