The Avatar trilogy (Shadowdale, Tantras, and Waterdeep) is the actual three novel set describing the Time of Troubles and how it came about and ended.
The Shadow of the Avatar trilogy (Shadows of Doom, Cloak of Shadows, and All Shadows Fled) is the trilogy describing what the "movers and shakers" of the Realms, such as Elminster, Khelben, the Seven Sisters and the like, were doing during the Time of Troubles.
Other good books for major events in the Realms are Prince of Lies the sequel to the Avatar trilogy ten years after the fact, and its own sequel Crucible: The Trial of Cyric the Mad three years after that.

Truelly wonderful ending, I can keep on going forever with positive synonyms, but I wont. This book had a dark undertone to it and had a more of a quest quality to it, which of course was refreshing and original.
For that reason, "Avatar: Books I and II" (and the two "Deep Space Nine" novels which follow it) are a wonderful surprise.
If you enjoyed The Avatar Trilogy- Shadowdale, Tantras, and Waterdeep, and the Prince of Lies, you will love Crucible: the Trial of Cyric the Mad, which is the conclusion to this wonderful series set in the magical world of Toril!

Shadowdale is the first book in The Avatar Trilogy from author Scott Ciencin (writing under the name Richard Awlinson) and set in the Dungeons and Dragons world of Forgotten Realms.
This trilogy is supposed to have been highly influential in the development of the Forgotten Realms world and it features the famous Gandalf-like wizard named Elminster.
This book ends on a major cliffhanger, but since this is the first part of a trilogy, you know there will be more.

Finder's Stone trilogy is an excellent FR trilogy which also involves gods and of course Finder's Bane which in a way resumes the plot and Tymora's Luck which I have not been able to read as of yet.
Then there is is the shadows of the avatar trilogy which also involves gods, atleast Shar but personally I don't think it comes anywhere near the level of the avatar trilogy.
From the ones that Tal mentioned the Elminster trilogy is mostly about Elminster and involves only Mystra and her relationship with El, and since I don't like Greenwood's writing I don't like the Elminster series.

The books are so incredibly well written that the reader feels that they have been transported to another plane of existence and are actually present among the characters, seeing what they see, feeling what they feel, sensing what they sense.
The authors have truly outdone themselves and have presented us with a masterpiece of literature the likes of which we have seen only in JRR Tolkien's work, RA Salvatore's The Dark Elf and Icewind Dale trilogies, and in authors Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman's Dragonlance Chronicles and Legends trilogies.
