 DVDFILE.COM: The Avengers review
THE AVENGERS had already been a hit in Britain for four years, and John Steed was already coupled with his third partner, before the show crossed the pond and became an overnight sensation in the States.
For the uninitiated, THE AVENGERS (at least during the important seasons!) concerned John Steed and Emma Peel, extraordinary government agents who specialized in investigating the bizarre (sound familiar to anyone?).
Though color was still relatively new to television (yes, children, there was TV before color!) and was definitely new to the series, great care was given to the color schemes used in filming.

 Lane's Page on The Avengers
Patrick Macnee once said, "The Avengers is a show about a man in a bowler hat and a woman who throws men over her shoulders." That sums the program up as well as anything, for The Avengers is a show that leaves much to the viewer's imagination.
The Avengers focuses on the adventures of secret agent John Steed and the succession of talented amateurs he recruits to help him solve a series of unique and off-kilter crimes and plots against the state.
The Avengers began in 1960 when an almost vagabond, and then semi-employed, actor named Patrick Macnee was approached to take the role of John Steed, a mysterious figure who would be a secondary lead to the character of Dr. David Keel, played by Ian Hendry, on a new television adventure/thriller called The Avengers.

Books: Mod, Mod World (Tucson Weekly . 04-13-98)
Ostensibly about the sexy-mod British television series of the 1960s, The Avengers is really a primer in all things pomo, a look at the way contemporary culture theory can use something as mundane as a show about a woman in a leather catsuit to illuminate a moment in the modern zeitgeist.
For fans of the series, there is indeed a history of its production, stories of the ups-and-downs of filming a British show for an increasingly global audience, and inside information on the vagaries of casting that led from one sidekick to another for the quaintly upper-crust John Steed.
One could quickly be convinced by this volume that The Avengers was the perfect mirror of the anti-modern mood of the '60s, and insofar as it underwent so many changes in form and cast, perhaps it was.

Hendry was considered the star of the series, receiving top billing over Macnee and Steed did not appear in several episodes.
The revised series continued to be broadcast in America, but without Rigg the ratings plummeted and the show was cancelled in the U.S. Without this vital commercial backing, production could not continue in Britain either, and the series ended in 1969.
Fans are divided on the merits of the revival, with many suggesting the show lost its magic in the 1970s, and the final half-dozen episodes, titled The New Avengers in Canada as they were filmed and produced there, are generally considered extremely poor.

Initially The Avengers was designed to showcase the breakout star of Police Surgeon (1960), Ian Hendry, in the role of a doctor who, after the murder of his fiancee, joined forces with mysterious secret agent John Steed (Patrick Macnee).

While The Avengers is often considered part of the James Bond/Cold War cycle of espionage thrillers, it actually dealt less with international issues and more with changes in modern Britain.
