A touchstone of American film comedy, "The Awful Truth" is screwball comedy at its most minimal.
This is an awful transfer, and that's the awful truth.

"The Awful Truth" provides a consistently witty script, memorable scenes and lines, smooth comedy direction, and established Cary Grant in a genre which he made his own, and typecast Ralph Bellamy for years (his "type" was hysterically sent-up in "His Girl Friday").
Typical of the vintage comedies of the thirties, the laughs are neither telegraphed nor forced; pleasantly rewarding for the audience who like their comedy to connect with their funny bone via their brain, and not their glands.
When the AFI did its "50 Greatest Stars" a few weeks ago and Irene Dunne was NOT among the 25 women...well, there was shouting at our house The Awful Truth is a perfect example of her wit and graciousness all at the same time.

DVD Savant Review: The Awful Truth
The Awful Truth does have a bias in favor of New York upperclass sophisticated types; nobody seems to work too hard or live in anything less than a fancy apartment, although the Warriners' source of income, a mine, seems to have dried up.
I think that the reason Dunne is far less known today than she should be is that so many of her films were remade and her original versions were withdrawn from circulation (television and theater) as was the studio practice at the time.
Cimarron, Back Street, Love Affair, Magnificent Obsession, Show Boat, The Awful Truth, Roberta, My Favorite Wife, Anna and the King of Siam were all remade in the 50s and 60s and thus were not shown on television or rereleased to theaters.

DVD Verdict Review - The Awful Truth: The Complete Series
Still, Moore creates a populist persona: the schlep, the outsider who will cheerfully grab a beer from your fridge as he whispers in your ear the latest gossip about the boss flying to Antigua with a cheerleader who is not his wife.
This character is at the center of Moore's television series The Awful Truth, which aired for two seasons on cable's Bravo network.
In the show's second season, Moore jettisons the studio audience and turns The Awful Truth into a clone of TV Nation, shooting bridging segments in Times Square and employing correspondents to pick up half the stories.

Interesting, too, is that Irene Dunne, in the comedy lead, was first brought out as a celluloid comedienne by Columbia in 'Theodora Goes Wild.' She tops that performance by almost an Alp in 'Awful Truth,' and Cary Grant, opposite, is flagged in on his best fast light-comedy performance to date.
