Aztec - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Classical Nahuatl (also known as Aztec, and simply Nahuatl) is a term used to describe the variants of the Nahuatl language that were spoken in the Valley of Mexico -- and central Mexico as a lingua franca -- at the time of the Spanish conquest of Mexico.
In the writings of Bernardino de Sahagún, Aztec "anonymous informants" defended the practice of human sacrifice by asserting that it was not very different from the European way of waging warfare: Europeans killed the warriors in battle, Aztecs killed the warriors after the battle.
The Aztec staple foods included maize, beans and squash to which were often added chilis and tomatoes, all prominent parts of the Mexican diet to this day.

THE AZTECS SPEAK - AN AZTEC ACCOUNT OF THE CONQUEST OF MEXICO. PART 1 - BY SHEP LENCHEK - IN MEXICO CONNECT
While the Aztec account of the Spanish Conquest of Mexico does not basically change the facts we are already familiar with, it does detail brutality and massacres on the part of the Spaniards that historians have simply glossed over.
The records also reveal that the Aztecs were captives of their own legends, principally the one about a great god/leader, Quetzalcoatal, who the Toltecs, the people who proceeded the Aztecs as rulers of the Valley of Mexico, credited with bringing them civilization.
Thus, the Aztec concept of war after their empire was established was not the total defeat of an enemy, but rather a short skirmish to capture warriors to sacrifice to their Gods.

When Barbara is mistaken for the reincarnation of the Aztec's High Priest, Yetaxa, she seizes the opportunity to put an end to the ceremonial rites of human sacrifice and save the Aztecs from self-destruction.
She joins the Doctor, who tries to engage her attention to a stone in the tomb wall which bears Yetaxa's sign, but she is more interested in the beans.
Barbara, who hopes to be gone from here by then, tacitly agrees to this for now, saying only that she wants all three of her servants to be at the ceremony, especially her handmaiden.

 Homework Hotline - Mythology
Another interpretation sees myths as developing from an improper separation between the human and nonhuman; animals, rocks, and stars are considered to be on a level of intelligence with people, and the dead are thought to inhabit the world of the living in spiritual form.
Those who characterize the ordinary as profane and secular view myths as a form of sacred speech and thus as particular manifestations of a universal religious sensibility.
Myths treating the origin of fire, or its retrieval from some being who has stolen it or refuses to share it; the millennium to come; and the dead or the relation between the living and the dead, are common.

Ironically, the Aztec ritual of human sacrifice--in which the hearts of defeated warriors were torn beating from their bodies--contributed to the defeat of Motecuhzoma's own warriors: While Cort‚s's men fought to kill, Aztecs attempted to capture enemies for sacrifice.
Interestingly, despite the Aztec success in the building arts and in supplying food for large cities, they had no beasts of burden- -everything was transported by water or by human porters; horses were introduced by the Spanish.
Dr. Smith's work tends to emphasize the day-to-day life of the Aztec villagers and peasantry, whereas Dr. Townsend focuses more on the grand sweep of cities, nobility, and empire.

One particularly notable, innovative, and ultimately monumental Aztec event in 1973; mounted in the wake of the band's incredible popularity and dominance at this time; was the band's farewell concert at the brand new Sydney Opera House.

 Doctor Who
For the uninitiated, Doctor Who is the longest-running fantasy TV series in history, airing from 1963 to 1989 in its native United Kingdom (followed by occasional specials and a TV-movie revival attempt) and finally in 2005 the series will be returning with a full series of 13 episodes.
Doctor Who was about ideas and pioneered the kind of sophisticated mixed-level storytelling.
Its format was the key to its longevity: it is the simple story of the Doctor, a mysterious traveller in space and time, whose vehicle (the TARDIS, one of the icons of the series) can take him and his companions anywhere at any time.

Originally aired in 1964, “The Aztecs” is a shining tribute to how good Doctor Who can truly be, even with an old set of episodes from the series' initial season.
However, the darker side is also discovered, mainly in the fact that Aztecs performed ritual sacrifices on a regular basis to appease their Gods.
This Doctor Who DVD is also special in the fact that the BBC had to go through great lengths in restoring this story from a filmed copy of the original video recording, which no longer existed.
