As followers of Christ, we are called to live a life that reveals the beauty of God.
The Beautiful Mess, Week 4 — A "bottom feeder" is a type of fish that is a term that can represent a way of living where a person is always trying to get value and life from things outside of themselves.
Unfortunately, even some leaders of Christ's body can fall into a religious type of bottom feeding where they actually take life from the people they serve rather than empowering those people to be ministers in their own right.

THE CINEMA LASER DVD REVIEW-- THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL
THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL ($20) is probably one of the best movies about Hollywood produced during the golden days of the studio system.
In THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL, Kirk Douglas portrays ruthless movie producer Jonathan Shields, whose career is traced in flashback, from the perspective of three of the people that Shields stepped on, on his way up the ladder of Hollywood success.
Of course, there are a few blemishes on the film element to remind one that THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL is half a century old, but there is nothing to distract the viewer from the intensity this finely polished gem.

The Bad and the Beautiful follows Douglas' Jonathan from his beginnings in "B" movies with director Sullivan, through the time he gave the alcoholic strumpet Turner her big break (by forcing her to grow up) and turned the academic and dry Powell from a gawky and pedantic writer into a revered screenwriter.
Turner's life appears to be the stuff from which "The Bad and the Beautiful" was conceived, and it's a powerful juxtaposition.

The Bad and the Beautiful, written by Charles Schnee and directed by Vincente Minnelli, is one of a handful of great Hollywood movies about making movies and the cost of putting one's professional life before personal relationships.
Just like those films, The Bad and the Beautiful tells us that the choice that must be made between art and life is a difficult one.
He isn't intrinsically bad, but it's clear that he will go to any extent to control a situation, as in his first scene in the film, when he has hired extras for his father's funeral.

 THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL
We've all, at some point, described a film as being "so bad it's good." When we do, we're speaking of a specific genre of "bad" that's not deliberately kitsch, but rather a serious attempt that aims for excellence and misses the mark.
In her 1964 essay "Notes on Camp," Sontag drew the line between "bad" art and the camp aesthetic (and, I'd argue, our beloved bad-good films): "In naive, or pure, camp, the essential element is seriousness, a seriousness that fails," she writes.
It upends our notions of good and bad taste; it lets us feel smart and act dumb at the same time; it offers a rare opportunity to revel in the profane pleasure of failure.

A re-seeing of "The Bad and the Beautiful" fairly recently reminded me of just how outstanding was his contribution to movies of all shades of quality.
It is certainly very professional in the way it slickly dissects an unsympathetic character through the flashback reminiscences of those he mistreated, but it had all been done before and considerably better in "Citizen Kane" and "All About Eve".

In The Bad and the Beautiful, Kirk Douglas plays a tyrannical, manipulative producer fallen on hard times.
The script has a lot of backstage clichés, but Vincente Minnelli's sharp, energetic direction, the gorgeous fl-and-white cinematography, and the topnotch performances--particularly Douglas and Gloria Grahame, who won an Oscar for her sweet role as the writer's cheerful Southern wife--flesh out the clichés with cutting details and convincing bile.
Caustic, starry-eyed, and slyly funny, The Bad and the Beautiful is a strange and skillful blend of "If I can make it here, I can make it anywhere" pluck and poisonous cynicism, one of the great movies about making movies.
