Halo Jones perplexed many readers at the time it was published, being a slow-moving exploration into a strange future society and people's emotions — not at all the standard for the fast-paced thrillpower-packed boy's adventure comic in 1984.

The Friday Review: The Complete Ballad of Halo Jones
THE COMPLETE BALLAD OF HALO JONES is something of a misnomer (out of a projected nine books, only the three collected here saw the light of day), but as a fictional biography of sorts, it's extremely entertaining, despite taking some time to warm to.
Part of the reason why HALO JONES works as well as it does is due to the appealing nature of Halo herself - she endears herself to the reader through her sheer ordinariness.
There is a brief interlude, though, in which Halo's life and times are discussed by a university professor and his students in a future even farther from the one Halo exists in.

Moore himself describes Halo as "an ordinary woman", though she lives in the 50th century - one of those nice round century numbers that satisfied SF junkies in the 80s.
Halo is an everywoman, and, as she is quoted as saying: "Anybody could have done it." What's more interesting about the series is Halo's struggle to keep moving forward, to exorcise her past ghosts, and to look to new horizons despite her problems.
Halo has no special abilities or an expense account; she's a working class future hero who makes her own destiny, with plenty of mistakes, and along the way she has many adventures.

But to Timothy Jones, presently up to his knees in shit (and other unmentionable substances) in the bilge tank, the vibration was enough to lose his grip on the floor and to send him flat on his back covered in the muck.
Tycho Jones, who had spent the last few days "proving" to the Federation personnel he was absolutely in no way even remotely related to Timothy Jones (who was still shovelling waste in the bilge tanks), immediately reacted.

The story of an ordinary girl living in a humdrum, overpopulated 50th century society, obsessed with fads and a lack of identity, is a stark contrast to the testosterone-fuelled action strips that dominate the comic.
Just ten weeks later, with the conclusion of Book One, Halo Jones has become one of the comic's most popular characters, largely due to Moore's emphasis on universal teenage concerns regarding escaping from home to forge one's own identity.

His 'Ballad of Halo Jones' was originally designed to take place in a future revolving around soap operas and shopping bags rather than guns and space cowboys.
This ideal proved challenging to some of his employers: by Book 3 Halo was a gun-toting gal like all the others, albeit a gun-toting gal with issues.
It has been this ambiguous relationship with the comic biz that explains a career that has seen as many false starts as pristine multi volumes, and a lot of time leaving and rejoining the 'mainstream'.

Yes, sadly so did I. I realise that this is the worst possible way to start the review of the book but the film really was a shoddy and lazy bit of work when compared to Moore's detailed and twisting Jack the Ripper epic.
Moore placed himself firmly at the top of the intellectual comic authors list with Watchmen, but even before that he brought us the wonderful Ballad of Halo Jones, and those gun toting, drug taking, mega-violent madmen DR & Quinch and V for Vendetta.
Moore firmly places Sir William Gull as the Ripper from the outset, but the plot winds around the familiar characters of the Prince Regent and Walter Sickart, both of whom have been named as the serial killer in other works.
