  The Banger Sisters
The Banger Sisters is a light piece of nothing, for the most part devoid of any substance, but moderately amusing to watch, mainly due to its two stars, Goldie Hawn and Susan Sarandon.
She was just fired from the venerable Whiskey, and doesn't know what to do, so she's off to Phoenix to visit her best friend from the day, "Vinnie." Suzette and Vinnie were the notorious Banger Sisters, companions to many rock stars and the occasional roadie.
The Banger Sisters may be enough to put a smile on some people's faces, but is a little too in substantial to make any sort of permanent impression.

The Banger Sisters (2002) Movie Review
In the character of Suzette, a past-50 former groupie who is still desperately holding on to her old life and her old sexuality even as she is finally learning that she is becoming obsolete, Hawn taps in on a depth of emotion and pain that makes it obvious this role has touched her deeply.
Lavinia's perfect existence becomes complicated when free-spirited Suzette blows back into her life after twenty years apart, and Lavinia is forced to confront the wild past that she has hidden for so long from her husband (Robin Thomas) and daughters (Erika Christensen and Sarandon's real-life daughter Eva Amurri).
You also have to give The Banger Sisters credit that it is the very rare film that will actually seriously look at the sexuality of two women who are over 50 without making a gross Farrelly Brothers joke of it.

But The Banger Sisters is a relentlessly lightweight and underdeveloped vehicle that wants to evoke the feminist frivolity of Thelma and Louise (interestingly enough a previous Sarandon cinematic vehicle) with the introspective loony touch of the wistful aforementioned Almost Famous.
The Banger Sisters only scratches the surface as a tawdry examination of mature females trying to identify with their true inner selves as a sense of feminine fearlessness.
The Banger Sisters occasionally exhibit a raw sense of sexuality that compliments the alluring maturity of bombastic babes Sarandon and Hawn.

I thought of this while watching The Banger Sisters, a film in which two ex-groupies meet up after one has become prim and proper while the other still keeps up with the manic lifestyle of her younger days.
In their younger days Suzette (Hawn) and Vinnie (Sarandon) were legendary rock groupies, nicknamed The Banger Sisters by Frank Zappa; they hung out with rock stars in the sixties and seventies and have the Polaroids to prove it.
Suzette still works at the bar in which she spent so many nights as a Banger Sister, that is until she is fired and faced with eviction.

Free-spirited Suzette (Hawn) remained true to their past as the notorious rocker-lovin' Banger Sisters, and when she visits Vinnie after decades apart, it's not long before Vinnie rediscovers the lively self she'd buried under her drably expensive wardrobe.
"Banger Sisters" is not laugh out loud funny, but there are priceless funny moments, as Suzette and Vinnie are caught with a toke in Lavinia's basement, while browsing through the Polaroids they took of memorable "parts" of their affairs with rock icons.
Vinnie (Susan Sarandon) lives a beige existence in a tony Phoenix suburb where she and her staid attorney husband are raising two teenage girls; she is the suburban matron to beat all matrons.

This is a shame, because Sisters introduces unusual characters that deserve to be explored, starting with Suzette (Hawn), a former groupie and by-product of the “free love” era who refuses to admit times have changed.
Fired from her bartending job at the famed Whisky A Go-Go, Suzette hits the road to Phoenix to rekindle her fizzled relationship with her former cohort, Lavinia “Vinnie” Kingsley (Sarandon), the other half of the infamous Banger Sisters.
Sisters spins its fascinating characters in a circle for two hours, then unceremoniously dumps them into a tidy resolution.

 DVD REVIEW: "THE BANGER SISTERS"
Yet, it never manages to be the insightful or hilarious comedy that it wants to be and thinks it is. A great deal of that's due to the filmmaker taking both the easy and safe way out of what could have been some intriguing, explosive and rather funny material.
It doesn't take a film degree or much more than common sense to realize that the repressed "sister" will loosen up, remember and return, at least in part, to her more carefree ways.

"The Banger Sisters" is a highly entertaining and refreshingly nonjudgmental movie about that rock-and-sex daydream 20 to 30 years after the fact.
But as with so many Hollywood pictures, there's a subtler, better movie lurking within the crowd-pleaser, and in the case of the "The Banger Sisters," it's not so hard to tease it out.
Goldie Hawn is Suzette, a 50-ish rock 'n' roll fun girl who, even though she still looks pretty damn good, suddenly realizes she has to reckon with the fact that times have changed.

By any rational standards, The Banger Sisters is a terrible film: it's ugly to look at, riddled with inconsistencies, stuffed to bursting with hoary clichés, and completely unencumbered by anything resembling intellectual rigour.
And yet, it's so sweetly lacking in malice that I forgave a lot of its sins--not enough for me to recommend it as anything other than a rental, but enough to say that those who dread the thought of a heartwarmer starring Goldie Hawn are in for a pleasant surprise.

Sarandon's daughter in real life, Amurri in "Sisters" plays a much shriller sibling than the charmingly upbeat daughter she plays in the upcoming "Made-up." Here, she's loud and physical and almost steals the show.
As for the big sisters, Sarandon goes through a bigger transformation, but she has less raw charisma than Hawn, who dominates the film.

Two old pals -- groupies who snapped pix of the rock-star members they caressed in the '60s -- Suzette (Hawn) and Vinnie (Sarandon) were dubbed ''the banger sisters'' by, we're told, Frank Zappa (a slander on the dead, since Zappa invented a much better term for such women in ''Suzy Creamcheese'').
''Sisters'' could have explored how female counterculturalists were exploited and liberated by hippie sexual freedoms, but instead, Dolman reduces Sarandon to an uptight suburbanite and writes Hawn as a bigger bubblehead than she ever was on ''Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In.''
Sarandon handles the initial embarrassment of introducing her friend -- and by extension her past -- to her husband and children with aplomb.
